FairSquare Comics Announces Return of Flagship Character in All-new Series

FairSquare Comics is pleased to announce the return of their flagship character (previously seen in Mutiny Magazine) with the arrival of the much-anticipated comic book series launch MUTINY: BLACK GIRL MAGIK via Kickstarter campaign this month, March 2024.

Initially launched on Kickstarter in 2021, Mutiny Magazine was then offered as a bimonthly magazine through Diamond, featuring the titular flagship character, Miss Mutiny. Now back and better than ever, Miss Mutiny finally receives her due with MUTINY: BLACK GIRL MAGIK launching with an all-Black femme team featuring Kristal Adams, writer, comedian, and co-owner of FairSquare Comics, as lead writer, Asiah Fulmore (formerly DC Comics, NBC Universal), as illustrator, and Amanda Meadows (formerly Oni Press) as co-editor.

FairSquare Comics co-owner Kristal Adams said, “I’ve been working at comic cons all across the country over the course of the past three years and every single time we have an image of Mutiny at the table someone asks, ‘But what’s her story?’ And to see the disappointment in their faces each time when I have to explain that she’s our mascot but doesn’t yet have a story has been tough to bear. Now that I am finally writing her story, I am writing with each of these faces in mind. This book will be for every face that perked up at my table when they saw this powerful black woman and wanted eagerly to support anything she was a part of. “

In the updated MUTINY: BLACK GIRL MAGIK, Moriyah Pleasant is a charismatic and witty queen with the magic touch. As a successful NYC dating coach with a reputation as an “incel whisperer,” the results don’t lie –– until her latest matchmaking gig goes awry, leading to some irreconcilable differences.

The whole operation goes left when Moriyah discovers her client’s love interest is on the run…but from who? Moriyah’s dragged through spacetime and confronted with the tyrant Ezek, an Alchemist consumed with his murderous pursuit to destroy all magik in the universe. But now she’s trapped and wanted for a crime she didn’t commit— and she’s not having that!

Editor Amanda Meadows added, “Fairsquare Comics is a force. Love to work with a dynamic and conscious publisher who walks their talk! When we linked up, I was immediately interested in Mutiny. She’s a vibe, and collaborating with the brilliant Kristal Adams and Asiah Fulmore on this series is so organic and fun. Badass Black femmes all the way down. Excited for the world’s meet-cute with Mutiny!”

Asiah Fulmore added, “I’m really excited to be part of this project. I think the concept feels very refreshing and fun. I feel like readers will really connect with the story and characters.

The Kickstarter campaign will include six covers in total, including main cover, drawn and colored by talented artist Alitha E. Martinez (Nubia: Queen of the Amazons, Nubia and the Amazons), a digital deluxe edition, and more.

“It also wasn’t until after I wrote the first issue that I realized how much this story reflects some of my favorite pieces of cultural media. So, if you’re someone who loves Star Wars, The Wiz, and Jim Henson’s Labyrinth, you will love this series,” Kristal affirmed.

The Kickstarter campaign launched March 1st with the full-color MUTINY: BLACK GIRL MAGIK, variant covers, and digital edition available to backers in summer 2024.
