VIDEOGAME REVIEW: Super Daryl Deluxe

Super Daryl Deluxe created by Dan and Gary Games is an fantastically fun game. Daryl is reminiscent of a retro 70’s “Keep on Truckin’”“ character. The animation style is simplistic yet engaging. The limited coloration and art design makes it feel as though you are playing through a comic strip. All NPC’s are uniquely designed and have their own personalities. The enemies are also memorable due to their comedic persona.  My personal favorite enemies are the Sexy Saguaro and Furious Ferocactus. The game’s humor walks the line of being juvenile and yet dotes iconic historic figures such a Einstein, Mozart and Cleopatra. Insertion of pop-culture references along with the dialog between characters make this game enjoyable for any age group. The level designs were nicely done with each classroom having it own unique look and music, making the areas immediately recognizable.

The mechanics of the game are refreshing. First, you do not have standard attacks but instead combine abilities with cool down timers. This gaming mechanic took getting used to, but it added a level of difficulty that was unique and made you choose your ability“s wisely, as some work better with others. Also, unlike most current games, there  is no auto save feature so you need to remember to save your progress often. I don’t personally consider this a negative feature, but some may dislike having to use the save points. There are many fetch quests in the game; however items needed are dropped frequently enough that you can easily obtain all the items by time you start the quest and they do not take you out of your way to complete.

There are a few issues with the game. Sometimes the enemies do not attack you when you walk past them.  In order to level up, you will need to engage them in battle anyway.  I also ran into a couple game breaking glitches. In my first play-through, in Part 2, I needed to go into the Princess’s room to progress the plot. However, the game crashed every time I entered the room. I tried everything, except buying a new system. I started the game over. During my second play-through half of the screen turned completely black. I could still see my inventory and status bar but nothing else. I could have continued playing, so not completely game breaking, but not being able to see much of the screen was too much  interference, so I stopped playing.

I hope the creators of Super Daryl Deluxe continue to make games. Their characters were unique and level designs were on point. If it were not for those two annoying glitches this game would have easily scored a 10/10. Unfortunately, because I was unable to complete the game, Super Daryl Deluxe is merits only 5/10. (2.5/5)
