What Is the Marvel Universe Online?
What is the Marvel Universe Online? In every superhero game, the experience of having superpowers comes with one significant drawback, they are not your powers. You are not Spider-Man or Batman, you simply live vicariously through their eyes. The Marvel Universe Online wants to change that and give the players the tools needed to create themselves as the superhero or supervillain.
Building off of the basic premise of previous games such as City of Heroes, the Marvel Universe Online seeks to expand on the idea of “You are the Hero” by tapping the cutting edge advancements in game development, while also fostering community engagement among comic and gaming fans at the same time. Simply put, the Marvel Universe Online is a pitch deck to create a Massive, Open-World, Action RPG with fully customizable player characters in an expanding, adaptive version of the Marvel Universe, not currently affiliated with Disney or Marvel.
The Marvel Universe Online Project is in two parts. The first part is the game pitch, where we present concepts and design features of a massive, open-world, third-person game set in the Marvel Universe. Everything is extensively researched and presented as if for development. With our expanding knowledge of the development process and help from people such as AWS Game Tech, we continue to work on fine-tuning our presentations.
The second part is the lore and community features of the OHOTMUO (Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe Online) where we showcase artists in the fandom. “We use our platform to support up-and-coming artists and writers by integrating their ideas into the history of our fictional Earth 619. That way, everyone can feel like they are part of a fun and fascinating project,” says Mike Davenport, Founder and Creative Director of the Marvel Universe Online.
About Mike Davenport
Mike first fell in love with graphic novels like the X-Men, and God Loves Man Kills, growing up in the inner city of Washington, DC in the 70s and 80s. A late bloomer to gaming, Mike’s first exposure to massively multiplayer online (MMO) games was City of Heroes. To Mike, City of Heroes was a virtual world that drew him in like a good book. For years afterward, he always felt City of Heroes had potential that was limited by the technology of the time. It was this missed potential that inspired Mike to start building the pitch deck that would become the Marvel Universe Online.
Going back over his copy of The Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe Deluxe Edition, Mike realized that Marvel had unwittingly already laid the narrative groundwork for a game that was even more expansive than City of Heroes, DC Universe Online, Champions Online, or even Marvel Heroes. His plan for the Marvel Universe Online is to structure those ideas into a cohesive presentation, to get as much input from other fans and those in the industry to “crowd build” the pitch deck to game developers and eventually Marvel themselves.
