KICKSTARTER ALERT: Banana Tail and The Checkerboard Jungle

“Author Mark McKenna has created unique, colorful characters with telling expressions in his book Banana Tail; capturing both my imagination and the imagination of my six-year-old son. McKenna not only takes us on a wondrous adventure in this story, but reminds us of an important moral–acceptance.”“

Longtime comic book artist Mark McKenna launches a new Kickstarter for his third picture book Banana Tail and the Checkerboard Jungle.

Best known for his prolific ink work on more than 600 comic books and 12,000 pages for DC and Marvel Comics in a 35 year span, McKenna“s children“s book series, Banana Tail, has always been a labor of love. He began the series after his father John, who created some of the characters and story ideas, passed in 2002. McKenna opted to self-publish the first book after some interest with publishers Little Golden Books and Simon & Schuster didn“t pan out, and within a short amount of time sold out of his initial print run.

In 2003, Diamond Distribution chose McKenna“s Banana Tail as a “spotlight”“ pick of the month. In 2005, book retailer giant Barnes & Noble added Banana Tail“s Tales and Activities to their children“s book department. In 2011, Image Comics broke into the children“s book market and published McKenna“s second picture book Banana Tail“s Colorful Adventure.

His most recent title, The BOOnana Halloween Special (2016), was created in comic book format and designed to be read by the same children who grew up with their parent“s reading Banana Tail and his friends to them.

McKenna“s latest children“s story Banana Tail and the Checkerboard Jungle completes the series“ three story arc, with each book focusing on the friendships between Banana Tail and his two BFFs, Reena the mood color-changing rhino and Tic Tac the plaid zebra.

The crowd-funding effort via Kickstarter will cover the pencil and color art, production, lettering and nearly all the print costs for Banana Tail and the Checkerboard Jungle. The finished product is expected to ship July 2020.
