Movie Review: Avengers Infinity War

Synopsis:

The MCU just keeps getting better! This movie is close to being perfect in every way. Such a large production with this huge of an ensemble cast is not easy to pull off but the Russo’s did it and it is flawless. Each character gets to shine in their own unique way and the actors by now are so comfortable with these characters that they probably don’t need much rehearsal. No spoilers here. I just want to say that the two hours and forty minutes went by so quick for me, I felt like I was in and out in half an hour. The Guardians of the Galaxy are pulled into the fight and we learn something new about the relationship between Gamora and Thanos. Wakanda plays a big part in the proceedings. The scientists of this fictional African nation are racing against time to try to remove the Mind Stone from Visions forehead without destroying the android himself. this is the last stone that Thanos needs to gain control of the infinity gauntlet. Will Thanos succeed? Will Vision, or anyone, survive the fury of Thanos? As with all good action movies sacrifices will be made and even the Hulk is afraid to show his face in this film. It was a real treat seeing the banter between Thor and the Guardians also later on with Chris Pratt and Robert Downey Jr. The comedy is here, but it’s a bit more subdued than in Thor Ragnarok.Â Which is a good thing because I found the humor to be a bit too over the top in that film. I loved it, but given the film’s subject matter, the humor could have been relaxed a bit. Here the actors shine with an even amount of dramatic tension and humorous relief.

Every actor makes good use of what they’re given here. It’s almost hard to pick a stand out, but if I had to, I must say that Zoe Saldana shines. Her character is the one that Thanos can relate to the most and, without telling new comers why, She has the most to lose. What she has with Thanos is a love/hate relationship and she’s torn between wanting him to fail and wanting him to find some kind of redemption and change his evil ways, but it’s hard to see Thanos changing his ways since he believes that he’s doing what needs to be done for the preservation of the universe. The Hitler’s and Stalin’s of the world do not see themselves as the evil monsters they are, if they did they probably wouldn’t be able to live with themselves. We see Gamora grow up and learn why she has this torn view of Thanos from a young age. Josh Brolin gives an awesome, subtle performance as Thanos, a bad actor might have hammed it up for the camera, making Thanos a standard by the numbers bad guy, but Brolin gives Thanos that nuance, for lack of a better word, that the Marvel Universe has invested in the character to begin with. You can see the sadness in his eyes when he does what he perceives needs to be done with Gamora as he tries desperately to make her see his side of things. And Saldana gives it right back in her performance as her heart breaks and the conflict she feels rises to the surface. This is, by far, the best MCU film to date and maybe the best Superhero film ever made. I loved it! ****1/2 (9.7 rating)
