Movie Review: Venom

Synopsis:

Eddie Brock (Hardy) Is an investigative journalist that’s assigned to interview Charlton Drake (Ahmed) of the Life Institute. He discovers some shady goings on at the Life Institute and threatens Drake which gets him, and his girlfriend (Williams) fired. It turns out that Brock was right to question Drake when his assistant (Slate) goes to Brock for help when she discovers that Drake is experimenting with alien symbiote life forms while trying to merge them with humans. These experiments lead to deformities and death.

Review:

A Spider-Man villain with no Spider-Man to battle. I was debating exactly how to rate this film. On the one hand, it starts out as a very intriguing entry to the library of Superhero films as of late. Showing experiments with alien life forms being merged, at first with animals, but then an all too eager Charlton Drake ups the experiments to human trials way to quick. These scenes are the most interesting moments in the movie. Unless you’re from outer Mongolia you know that Eddie Brock is going to have a successful merging with a Symbiote to become Venom, and here’s the problem with the film. Venom is way too cartoony to ever be considered a threat. The CGI reminds me of Bugs Bunny’s Tasmanian devil at times, only bigger. I almost expected him to become a tornado at some point and start tearing up the Life Institute. What could have been a film that evoked terror, indeed, the first half hour or so actually did, instead went way too far to get laughs. It seems that Sony is trying to hard to create a hit film. They know MCU movies are huge hits and contain a lot of humor and they also know the DCEU movies have mostly flopped and were way too serious and criticized for being so. This is why I am so glad that Disney bought out Sony. They know how to balance the humor and the drama in their MCU films. Tom Hardy does a tongue in cheek jock type of character, which is closer to the comic book than Topher Grace’s turn in Spider-Man 3 and it does work within the scope of this film. The cast is mostly fine, I have no problem with any of the performances, but because of how silly the film became I almost gave it 2 1/2 stars, but ultimately the origin story itself won me so *** (8.1 rating)
