NYCC 2025: Patrick Coyle Brings the Supernatural Heat with Bixby Grant: Private Eye – Fangs & Brimstone

“Ladies and gents, demons and detectives grab your trench coats and your holy water, ‘cause we’re diving deep into the shadows of mystery, magic, and madness!”

That’s how we kicked things off live at New York Comic Con 2025, and trust me, the energy was supernatural-level high! Because in the hot seat, I had the wizard of the written word himself Patrick freakin’ Coyle creator of the supernatural-noir detective series Bixby Grant: Private Eye! And this time, he’s back with his latest, most devilishly good chapter yet Fangs & Brimstone #3!

This ain’t your average gumshoe tale, folks. Nah nah, this one’s got claws, curses, and cosmic consequences!

When I asked Patrick if Bixby was more Sam Spade or Doctor Strange, he laughed, “Maybe Constantine if Constantine had a hangover and a mortgage!”

That right there sets the tone for this series. Coyle breaks down Bixby as part classic noir detective, part supernatural anti-hero. Think Hellboy meets Raymond Chandler, sprinkled with a dash of Batman: The Animated Series for that perfect moody flavor.

It’s got that pulp soul with modern snark,” Patrick says, grinning. “A little Raymond Chandler, a little Hellblazer, but with my own spin. It’s fun throwing all those influences in a cauldron and seeing what kind of monster comes out.”

The latest issue, Fangs & Brimstone #3, turns up the supernatural swagger. So of course, I had to ask the hard-hitting question:

“Which one’s scarier vampire fangs or brimstone breath after cheap whiskey?”

Patrick didn’t hesitate. “Definitely the whiskey.”

We both cracked up, but behind the laughs, there’s real craft in balancing horror and humor. “I keep it light,” he said. “I don’t go too deep into demonology I want it spooky, not sacrilegious. It’s the fun side of the dark side.”

And when I teased him about the idea of getting banned in bookstores, he just smirked:

“Hey, if that happens, maybe sales go up!”

Coyle’s passion for the fanbase shines through literally. He still includes an old-school letter column in the back of his books. “It’s my way of connecting, like the classic comics I grew up with. People write in the coolest stuff.”

He showed off the stunning covers from the series #1, #2, and the latest #3 each pulsing with noir mystique. And get this: the first book was a 72-page OGN (original graphic novel), all funded through Kickstarter.

“We fund each one before we release it,” he explains. “That way readers always know they’re gonna get their book.”

That’s how it’s done, indie style professional, punctual, and packed with passion.

Now, if Hollywood came calling (and you know it will), who’s playing Bixby?

Patrick didn’t miss a beat: “Nick Offerman. He’s got that gravelly, no-bullsh*t voice. He is Bixby.”

And the demon trying to repossess Bixby’s soul? Patrick laughed. “Maybe your next guest depends on what kind of movies they’ve been doing lately!”

When I asked about Bixby’s biggest skeleton in the closet, Patrick chuckled: “He’s got a Flintstones-style closet same outfit, over and over. Jacket, tie, shirt, hat. If one gets burned or shot through, he just grabs another. He’s immortal, so wardrobe’s not a problem.”

But that’s not the only mystery Patrick hints there might be an actual skeleton back there. “You’ll just have to read to find out.”

Picture this: Bixby Grant rolling into NYCC in full trench coat and attitude.

Patrick laughs, “He’d blend right in until the crowds get to him. Then he’d start throwing elbows. He hates being shoulder-to-shoulder with people. So yeah… security might get involved.”

The Bixby Grant: Fangs & Brimstone #3 Kickstarter is live until next Wednesday, and you can grab all three issues in one go!

Hit up BixbyGrant.com it’ll take you straight to the Kickstarter. You’ll find exclusive rewards, gorgeous enamel pins (yes, Patrick gifted me one on the spot!), and bundles for new readers.

“I wanted it easy,” Patrick says. “One click and you’re in. Reader-friendly, no filler, just fun.”

“Somebody call a priest and a bartender, ‘cause that was straight fire!”

Huge shoutout to Patrick Coyle for bringing the supernatural smoke to The Comic Crusaders Podcast!
