Review: Captain Marvel The Official Movie Special
Let’s get one thing straight. This isn’t a comic. If you open the pages of this special thinking that it’s some prelude or otherwise affixed to the movie title like Marvel so often generously likes to do, you might be disappointed. However, if you’re someone like me – who loves things like director’s commentary and the inner working of people who have worked on the films, you’ll love this.
In fairness, I’m not sure how to even rate something like this. It’s such an informative read that it’s likely to be less of an entertainment sort of thing, unless you’re someone like me who obsessively watches commentary and wants to know all the intimacies of what happens on set and what floods through director’s minds. Still, it’s worth reading, so much. There’s a lot of really great little blurbs from Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck that don’t just acknowledge working on Captain Marvel, but also touch on how it was first working on Iron Man.
These tiny bits of the writer and crew and cast’s soul are so very important. The subtle appreciation for other forms of media that pertain to characters also is also worth noting. So often people go into these films and then leave after viewing thinking that there is a disconnect between the pages and the screen so, for me, this is always worthy of inclusion.
In my opinion, the thing that really hits the mark for me about this entire read is the fact that we are granted words by Kelly Sue Deconnick, who – by large – has written some of the most beautiful, emotive, amazing things for Carol. I think that the little peek into how her writing may differ from that of Ms. Marvel’s creator, Gerry Conway. A lot of Carol’s life for the reboot was taken directly from bit of Deconnick’s life. There’s a lot of acknowledgement for the fact that so often times female heroes tend to not be any bit of what females are and how very important it was that Brie Larson’s Carol be the opposite of that.
Not only are there cute little stories about Kelly visiting set, there are beautiful pictures from behind the scenes and stills from the movie itself as well as information about timelines and characters for people who might not be all too familiar with Carol or even favorites like Nick Fury to delve into.
For me, reads like this that educate as well as entertain are invaluable. They feed both sides of our brain and the syntax in both words and knowledge are immeasurably important. I rate this entire read a solid 3.5 out of 5 and highly suggest it to anyone who has gotten the chance to see the film itself already.
