Review: Godkillers #1

Basically, when the people writing Scripture tried to describe what they saw when they saw an angel”¦ they run into the end of their imagination”¦ they can never quite seem to fully explain it because they had trouble even comprehending what they saw, let alone being able to describe it to someone else.

The God Killers are a Special Missions Unit under the control of the secretive Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC), they perform various clandestine and highly classified missions around the world when it involves religious object of power and magic . To top it off the unit’s missions that they have been asked to perform have increasingly included counter-terrorism, so the implications are that some of the Violent Extremist Organizations are using mythological creatures to wage war.

So what’s the difference between a bad guy who believes that his god has ordered him to cut off the head of his enemies, and the villains in God Killers? Well, DevGru took out al Qaeda bad guy Osama Bin Laden a few years ago, who believed he was acting on the behalf of his God. In God Killers the Gods actually show up and try to kill everybody.

When it comes to the action in God Killers #1, the flow definitely moves, perhaps too fast. The story goes from location to location, preferring to concentrate on introducing the characters rather than the actual story. That would not have been too bad, if Sable had not used the trope of team infighting as a way to introduce the characters.

The art by Maan House is impeccable, and the coloring by Hernan Cabera, gritty yet clean, and went a long way into demonstrating the usefulness of military tactics and training for integration into the story. It did feel like there were some missing panels though, which was a little distracting, as well as the skipping back and forth along the timeline.

In God Killers #1 I saw several elements that were similar to several other franchises such as : Tom Doyle“s American Craft series, which includes Legacy and The Left-Hand Way; Myke Cole“s, Shadow Ops;The anime/manga series Fullmetal Alchemist; Magical Girl Spec-Ops Asuka. So even though it is out to a great start, God Killers will a little bit more to separate itself from this increasingly crowded genre.

Godkillers #1 will comes with two covers: Cover A, Regular Jeremy Haun ; and the Cover B Incentive Tim Bradstreet Variant  (1:25).
