Review: Hack/Slash vs Chaos #3
People who know me know that I’m a huge Tim Seeley fan. From his Image works to his writing on Grayson, I’ve followed a lot of Seeley’s career closely. His work is typically impeccable and I’ve been a long running fan of Hack/Slash so when Dynamite brings little gems like a Chaos comic crossover to life, you can bet that by premise alone that I’m invested. Especially, when it brings in some of my favorites. If you don’t know some of the Chaos characters at work here, I might suggest looking through some of the older issues, because a lot of the stuff in this crossover as far as lore might be missed otherwise.
That being said, this fun little issue has enough happening in it that it’ll make readers invest in it. The art by Celor and colors by Dee Cunniffe alone are enough to draw you into the interiors. We open the story with a couple of kids playing around in the former Ceutotech Pharmaceuticals building, only to be chased off by Cassie Hack who seems to be on a mission. Apparently, there have been a large number of outbreaks of the dead rising and Cassie is there to stop whatever Slashers might be at work.
Cassie and her team of Vlad and Voodoo Childe quickly make work dispatching anything or anyone who might be there – and undead only to find themselves confronted by the Chosen…who, if you don’t know, consists of Carcass, Oblivia, Rip, Vex, Chastity, Evil Ernie and Purgatori. Well, sort of. The last bit is really just there being toted around like Deadpool courtesy of Domino.
When conflict inevitably occurs and we learn a little bit more about the powers in Cassie’s newly forged weapon of mass BAMFery. Turns out that Draugsplitter has the power to actually close the door and sever dark magics from the human world, which…if you’re one of the Chosen…is a very bad day. One that they all have gathered to try to stop from happening.
I can’t say that this works particularly well for anyone involved. Especially once we learn a little twist about what might actually be the forces at work behind all of this. It’s the sort of “Pay not attention to the man behind the curtain” thing that will end up being not so particularly great for Cassie and her friends, I’m sure. I think that if you give this sold 4 of 5 star title the chance, that you’ll find yourself intrigued enough to want to know how it all culminates and resolves itself.
