Review: Hawkman # 14
Synopsis:
This story opens with our hero having a ghastly nightmare. Carter awakens in a cold sweat and recounts the dream with his friend Hami. Here we see Hawkman’s fears, his ideas of reincarnation and how he will keep on being reincarnated until he amends for the sins of previous lives. Hami is there to encourage him and let him know he’s not a bad person. It’s a good way to open this issue, we see Carter as a real three-dimensional person along with all his fears about being inadequate. A hero is never stronger than his weaknesses and this hero has a lot of doubts and insecurities which can be explored here.
The Creative Team:
Robert Vendetti takes Carter Hall on the ride of a lifetime, making him feel emotions that he probably shouldn’t be feeling and taking him to a remote part of the world that has a past and a reputation for being the birthplace of the dawn of time, Mount Kenya. The feeling for Carter is a get away from it all trip where he hopes to sort things out in the myriad past of his mind. I’m enjoying this tale of self-doubt as it makes our hero seem vulnerable and more human then we’ve probably seen in a long time. We root for Carter to see the good that has come out of his varied existence and want him to succeed in finding himself. Great stuff includes a surprise villain and Carter’s initial surprise at his attacker. Oliffe and Palmer bring a Kubert-eque sensibility to their renderings that bring back memories of the classic era and this Hawkman’s first successful title. They’re definitely the right team at the right time to bring the character to life I find it so spot on you’d almost think Joe Kubert was resurrected just to come back to a title he made great. Highlights include Hawkman’s flight over Kenya and the first attack from the main villain of the piece.
In Conclusion:
DC is definitely doing the right thing with this title and bringing us a humanized version of this hero that really shows what it would be like for any man, even if he is an alien, to have gone through the rigors of what Carter Hall has faced. This issue brings back one of Hawkman’s earliest foes and brings a strong sense of nostalgia to our hero and this tale. All the while pointing to a new beginning for this issues thief which involves…to be continued. *** (8.2 ratings)
