Review: Justice League Odyssey #3
“Just try not to be weird.” – Jessica Cruz
Synopsis:
This issue begins a day early at the Hall of Justice and the voices want Viktor Stone (Cyborg) to go to the ghost sector. Starfire says he doesn’t have to go, but that she will protect him no matter what. Then we come to today in the ghost sector and all hell seems to have broken loose. Starfire seems to be infected with something and only a sonic blast from Cyborg will free her from its hold.
The Creative Team:
Joshua Williamson begins this issue with a bang as Cyborg, Green Lantern (Jessica Cruz) Starfire and Azrael have to escape a planet that is cracking up around them. Jessica’s power ring helps to fix their damaged ship and they leave the planet behind. It turns out that the planet isn’t being destroyed, but somehow forming a cocoon. Our heroes land on a snow planet. Cyborg and Starfire are alone on the ship when some type of alien arrives claiming that he can cure Starfire. Williamson succeeds in putting our heroes in several dire predicaments and we are drawn in by the alien landscape and wonder if this team’s efforts to fix their ship are good enough to lead them home. Great stuff includes our protagonists adjusting to a completely alien world that doesn’t even know who they, or the green lantern corps, are. Also, Cyborg’s link to this world.
Phillipe Briones gives us a fast and furious rhythm to his panels that helps pick up the pace and keeps the excitement level high. Brilliant art and his alien worlds keep us glued to the pages as much as Williamson’s words. Highlights include the splash where Cyborg and Starfire are finally able to assist Azrael and Green Lantern. Also the final page splash (no spoilers.)
In Conclusion:
An exciting fast paced issue highlights the alien world that our heroes visit. Will the inhabitants be friend or foe? Upon initial contact, they seem friendly enough. So now they have to fix their damaged ship and find a way home. However, the way the inhabitants of this world see Cyborg may make it difficult, even if they can get their ship fixed. Oh, they’re not being cruel to him, it’s just the opposite…to be continued. *** (8.3 rating)
