Review: Marvel Action Spider-Man #6

“Goes to show you what happens when you’re cheap.” – Miles Morales

Synopsis:

Peter Parker’s Spider-Man has just finished thwarting a bank robbery and a mugging and to top it off, he even found a coupon for free pizza! He’s swinging through the streets of New York to catch up to his friends, Miles, and Gwen to gloat about his day. He finally sees them, or what appears to be them, but his Spider-sense starts to tingle, according to the old cliche looks can sometimes be deceiving.

The Creative Team:

Erik Burnham brings one of Spider=Man’s greatest villains to this title. One we haven’t seen for a while. A refreshing return for one of the strongest in the web-slingers rogue’s gallery: Kraven the Hunter. I’m enjoying this tale as we see the Miles and Gwen characters out of commission for the beginning of this issue. Oh, I enjoy the dynamic between these friends, reminiscent of the old cartoon Spider-Man and his amazing friends, but I also miss the early days when Spider-Man acted alone and keeping Gwen and Miles away for the first part brings me back to those glorious days of yesteryear. It’s an exciting issue with a great battle between the two rivals. Great stuff includes the wall-crawler underestimating his opponent and the fight between miles and Gwen vs. Kraven’s cronies.

Christopher Jones brings our heroes into fluid motion as any great Spider-Man artist should. he makes the spider team’s action scenes look easy and gives the characters a certain flare. His Kraven is a tough no-nonsense hunter that looks all too happy to be on the prowl. Highlights include the fight scenes, which are paced well and are more than just a panel or two but show off our heroes abilities in great detail.

In Conclusion:

The IDW/Marvel titles are just getting better with each issue. re-introducing iconic characters with a fresh take and a modern sensibility that will help them gain a strong foothold in today’s comic book world. It’s a one-issue story that wraps things up smoothly, but I have a feeling that this won’t be the last time we see Kraven in the IDW/Marvel universe. *** (8.7 rating)
