REVIEW: MARVEL TWO-IN-ONE #12

“God, it’s like every villain read a self-help book by Namor.” – Johnny Storm

Synopsis:

The Fantastic Four have finally returned and in the search for Reed and Sue, Ben and Johnny recruited a scientist named Rachna Koul. This scientist claimed that she was going to help them with their weakened powers, but she was really looking for an alternate universe body for her sister, who is comatose. She trapped Ben and Johnny in an alternate universe then fled. But now that the four are reunited on earth, what will that mean for the scientist who was intent on killing them? The issue begins with the mole man as he is seeking help from the aforementioned scientist.

The Creative Team:

Chris Zdarsky brings the family dynamic back to our fearless foursome in style. He has Franklin and Val, brother and sister, tension begins to mount as Franklin wishes his sister gone. Then Johnny’s so distracted that he’s burning breakfast. Sue sees that something’s bothering her brother so she takes him on a “Storm shopping spree” to brighten his day and get his mind off of his problems. It’s the family dynamic that’s sadly missing in the live-action Fantastic 4 movies but brought to vivid life here. This doesn’t mean that Zdarsky ignores the action as he brings the Mole man into the thick of things. our antagonist is wreaking havoc as only he can. It’s good old-fashioned Fantastic 4 fun as only Mighty Marvel can bring it! Great stuff includes the secret behind how Mole Man got to control monsters again and our heroes pledge to their former foe.

Ramon K. Perez has a good feel for Marvel’s flagship heroes. the art is crisp and clear and he has a simple style that makes it look easy to bring these four to life, but I’ll bet it’s more difficult than he would let on. Highlights include the splash with the Mole Man and the final splash, no spoilers but lifelong Fantastic 4 fans will get the warm fuzzies all over!

In Conclusion:

This is a necessary issue as we get a true sense of reunion and forgiveness. Johnny’s temper is tamed for once and we get some good brother and sister action like we seldom see. The Storm siblings fighting side by side against their very first foe. It’s nostalgia for those of us who have collected this title since the ’60s. And the four find each other. Johnny comes to the realization that even though he was wronged, his family did what they did because they care about him. These heroes have gone through a lot and family tension always threatens to tear them apart, but they are always bigger than their problems. **** (8.8 rating.)
