REVIEW: Mech Cadets Issue 1
In 2017 we received Mech Cadet Yu by Boom Studios, a four issue miniseries focused on a young boy Stanford Yu, who had the dream of becoming a cadet one day. Only problem, he had not gone through the process of becoming a cadet through Sky Corps Academy. The story which takes place in the future where every four years sentient robots from outer space come to Earth to bond with a Sky Corps Academy cadet. In this case though, one of these robots bonds with Stanford. This has some obvious concerns for those students who have worked hard for this opportunity only to see Stanford who is the janitor at Sky Corps get chosen. Once these robots bond, that bond is forever. Stanford now needs to prove himself worthy amongst the other cadets.
The series was extremely popular and was immediately upgraded to an ongoing series that ended after twelve issues. The series has now been picked up by Netflix as an initial ten part animated series.
Created by Greg Pak and Takeshi Miyazawa, the duo has been asked once again to create a new story line that focuses more on the entire team of cadets. The new series title is Mech Cadets to reflect that.
Issue one story line is fantastic and the art is vibrant. Written by Greg Pak who is best known for writing for Marvel on titles like X-Men, Incredible Hulk, at DC comics on titles like Batman/Superman, Action Comics, and of course Boom as the co-creator of Mech Cadet Yu and Mech Cadets.
The art is done by Takeshi Miyazawa who has worked on titles for Dark Horse, Marvel and boom to name a few. Some of the titles he has worked on are Runaways, Spiderman Loves Mary Jane, Ultimate Comics: Spiderman,and X-Men.
This initial issue is fantastic fun. It is heart worming as we see the frustration of cadets needing to learn to take orders from their superiors, while their superiors could provide more trust in their cadets.
This is a great read that is good for every aged comic book fan. And it is just in time as the Netflix series begins August 10th, one day after the issue one release. This is a definite recommendation!
