Review: Mighty Morphin #11
Ryan Parrott just keeps coming up with great ways to expand the Power Rangers mythos. What started out as an explanation of Zordon’s past is revealed to be the origin of Lord Zedd and a massive leap forward to the threat of the Eltarians. Mighty Morphin #11 is full of strong characterization, interesting new enemies and flashbacks with a massive direct bearing on the Rangers. The epic also has some great art depicting the Rangers and the new Eltarian Sentry Force. The human and high school sequences are not quite as good, in part due to some odd coloring choices.
In the distant past, on contacting the Zeo Crystal, Zophram is transformed into who we know as Lord Zedd. He blames Zordon for this and swears that he will destroy Eltar. The present sequences with the high school Rangers is not as interesting. The Rangers are forgiving Billy even though Zordon will not. Kimberly is not forgiving Green Ranger Matt even though his betrayal has some justification.
Zordon summons the Rangers and the Supreme Guardian arrives to introduce them to the Eltarian Sentry Force Four, which is much like the Shi’ar Imperial Guard. They plan a quick takedown of Zedd to free Zelya, but instead Zelya arrives having freed herself. She is working as a double agent for Zordon and trying to protect earth but the Supreme Guardian is on to her act.
Zelya battles the Supreme Guardian and the Four but is taken down. The Supreme Commander tells Zordon that he needs the power coins for the Empyreal War, a war he has secretly set up by freeing the Empyreals. Zordon seems agreeable but then reveals to the Rangers that he and Zelya were very much in the know and they need to prepare for war with the Eltarians. This book has taken its time getting to this point, but at this point the conflicts are on hand and the enemies massive. It’s an exciting book but could use a bit better characterization of the Rangers, all the focus seems to be on Kimberly and Billy as usual. Given how great the writing on Power Rangers is, it would be a tragedy not to spend some time expanding the Rangers we don’t
