Review: Mutant Football League Dynasty Edition

Ladies and Gentlemen, let me start off by saying this is not your momma’s type of football, nor is it your daddy’s. Not even a particular commissioner would allow this type of football in our current league which is why I am pleased to provide a review of Mutant Football League Dynasty Edition. There are plenty of football games out there, but this game takes the others and blows them up.. quite literally. If you have never played a football game in this next gen age, then this is the one to start with. Why you may ask? It’s simple really, this game explains the basic rules of football and strategy in such a way that any player regardless of level of experience is able to understand the game and enjoy it. That right off the bat was a major plus for this game. The tutorial is perfect and explains not only the controls, but the strategy and football logic that will help you in other football games should you choose to look elsewhere. Before I get into more of the in-depth aspects of the game, I have to talk about the commentary of the game. If you have played any sports games of the past, you will instantly recognize one major voice. Tim Kitzrow may not be a name you know, but his voice is one everyone would know if you have played any of the following games: NBA Jam, NFL Blitz, NHL Hitz, Wayne Gretzkty 3D Hockey. That’s right, the Boomshakalaka is in this game, and I couldn’t be more happy about it.

Controls:

Controls are easy to pick up and are intuitive for all level of gamers. In fact, you don’t need to memorize 20 different button combinations for player movement, running, passing defense, kicking etc. The prepay controls are easy when it comes to calling audibles, sending receivers in motion, flipping the play etc.

Gameplay:

Mutant Football League brings the concept of football and makes it better and more hardcore than anything that the XFL old or upcoming could ever do, not like this is comparable between the two, but as I said, this isn’t the same type of football you would see on network tv. Not only are the players brutal, but the field is too. Yes the field becomes an additional factor. One unique twist to this game is the traps on the football field. Explosions, saws, worms, and other hazards create a situation that you really need to be on top of it, even if it’s unavoidable. The teams have the ability to play dirty tricks that can also impact the nature of the game as well, which I found to be a lot of fun. I should mention that you can kill, yes you can kill and eliminate the opposing teams players, either during a play or after. Talk about an epic plot twist to the game. The playbooks are simple in concept yet effective in the execution of the game. There are plenty of modes to choose from: Exhibition, Dynasty mode, online gameplay. All of which provide additional depth and replay value to the game without having to send out constant updates like other sports games. There are various teams that any football fan can still be loyal to their home team. Being a colorado native, I was excited to see the Mile High Chronic, and other rival teams that I would love to destroy on the field, or listen to Al Mega yell at me as we go head to head on the game. Yes that will be a thing. The challenge has been made.

The only things that I would like to see would be the ability to have some optional advanced controls for us experienced players (hot routes, selecting which player goes in motion, line shifts etc) for dynasty and exhibition mode, but keep everything the same in online mode.

All in all, if you love football games, then this is a must have game in your library. The best part is, the game is available on Xbox One, Playstation 4, Steam and yes the Nintendo Switch.
