Review: Pearl #11

Tattoo artist/assassin/yakuza clan leader Pearl Tanaka has confronted her heritage on the same mean streets where her grand-mother was born. Now she comes home to find her place in the new order.

PEARL #11 (MR)In Pearl #10: Pearl and Ricky, two former assassins mutually decide that living that living the normal life isn“t as much fun as they thought, after three weeks of absconding off to Japan, and taking normal  jobs, and  getting a place together.  Then Pearl #10 concluded with Pearl and Ricky, deciding to go back to the life and pearl finding out that her father has just been released from prison.

Which brings us our current issue Pearl #11,  which reconvenes with the reunion between Pearl and her ex-convict father, and her uncle the head of the local Yakuza, in a meeting that sets the conditions for Pearl’s position of leadership going forward.

The inter-dialogue among the characters is off the chain and hilarious. Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Gaydos builds this story through the dialogue. It“s not all about what is directly being said, you have to peel back the layers and look deeper to see what“s really happening underneath the seemingly unrelated chatter.  they are able to make even plain conversations fascinating. They set the scene, develop the characters, and build tension.

The art by Michael Gaydos continues to be incredibly detailed and suited for the type of settings provided in each panel.  Some of the panels are cover art worthy.

Th flow of the panels is the only thing that throws me off it seems more suited for a movie storyboard, then a comic which makes sense when you consider that Pearl #11 is the first issue since , at the end of May , Brian Michael Bendis dropped the bomb inside the letter column of Pearl #10  that Mandeville Films has purchased the rights (optioned) Pearl.  So it’s going to be interesting to see the direction that Pearl goes know that it has shown that it has big screen potential.
