Review: Power Rangers #3

With Power Rangers, Ryan Parrott is scoring on every level with an entertaining, kinetic and envelope pushing book. Part of this is the continued thrill of the adventures of Trini, Zack and Jason filling in the gaps of their time away from our screens. Another is the space-faring setting allowing great new villains and races like the parasitic The Horrid attacking here. Finally the best part of this book is the incredibly interesting character of Drakkon who here plays both sides to ensure his own victory wherever the cards land.

This book has a lighter, humorous adventure tone helped by the unique characters of the robotic Xi and massive mascot Yale. Zack is the standout Ranger of the run so far with humor and growth, but each of the Rangers get their own chance to shine and grow without downgrading the other characters in the story. The smaller cast gives more time to give the heroes depth as they take to space to fight the Horrid.

Francesco Mortarino’s art on the vampiric Horrid is exactly right and Drakkon, Yale and all the characters are given a dynamic expressive nature. The colors by Raul Angulo are insanely well done fitting both the colorful Rangers and the dark theat they face. The action scenes are cinematic capped with Drakkon’s incredible betrayal of the Horrid when he finds the momentum moving in favor of the rangers.

The issue caps off with the Rangers entering a nightmare version of Angel Grove capping off a fantastic, action packed, character building issue with promise of more great things to come under Parrott’s guardianship of the Power Ranger universe.
