Review: Sentry #1
Synopsis:
This issue opens with our protagonist remembering the past in a retrospective on his life and how the world viewed him. He remembers that if he became the Sentry he would also open up the void, so he stayed away, inert…until now! He has found a way to become the Sentry once again. Joining him are his Sentry family; Sidekick Scout, Sentress and pet Watchdog. But with a unique spn in this super family reunion of epic proportions!
The Creative Team:
The Sentry is hardly anyone new to the Marvel universe. He’s one of Marvel’s answers to Superman. Created by Paul Jenkins and Jae Lee back in the late ’90’s. Jeff Lemire has been given the task of making him relevant to the current Marvel universe after years of absence. And he brings the character back in style, opening this issue with a battle between Voids shadow army, which are being powered by dark radio waves, and the Sentry family as they all join their fearless leader in battle! Great stuff includes Sentry’s finding and dealing with Void in the only way he can and a look into Bob’s personal life as we see him struggling as a short order cook at a greasy spoon.
Kim Jacinto seems to be channeling Jae Lee as you can see the influence from the original Sentry artist, but this is, by no means, a cheap imitation of Lee’s work. Jacinto clearly has a unique style that brings a certain freshness to the character. A perfect addition to Marvel’s re-birth (can I call it that? lol) Highlights include the opening splash where Sentry first appears and the splash where Sentry goes to the moon’s core.
In Conclusion:
When Spiderman first appeared, he was someone original teen-age comic book readers could relate too. An average teen with typical teenage problems that they could relate too. Now that those of us long term original readers are getting older, Sentry is an aging hero with the kind of problems we can relate too. Ironic, isn’t it? Lemire and Jacinto are worthy successors to Jenkins and Lee. Fans of the original run of Sentry will clearly be happy with this title and this issue is a good introduction to the character for new readers who are sure to become fans. The issue has action, a return to basics and a surprise or two on the way. Get your copy today! ***1/2 (8.7 rating)
