Review: Star Trek #16
Star Trek is a consistent, well-written, fascinating book pushing the future of Sisko forward. Seeing tales filled with characters we love in new and interesting situations makes this book a pleasure to read. Every single chapter is filled with small character moments that lift the larger narrative. Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing are real fans of the work that understand the voices of these fan favorites and gives us exactly what classic era fans want. The sad fact is that we are unlikely to see Sisko on screen in any meaningful way. So this comic gives us a sort of cathartic opportunity to see how he would do leading a starship.
Sisko and the Theseus crew have suffered a great loss here, defeated by the Romulans right in front of the Dino-warrior race of Tzenketh. Sisko must heal from massive wounds even while trying to prevent a larger war between the Cardassians and the Tzenkethi fleet. This issue really takes us deeply into the world of Sisko, we see his pain, we see his refusal to give up, we see his political prowess in navigating the conflict and his leadership under fire.
We also get so many nice moments on the brink of battle. Data takes on the tasks of the entire bridge crew, Beverly Crusher and Scottie exploring the depths of Tzenketh to discover the planet it’s self is in imminent danger of volcanic destruction. Lily Sato deals with defeat and disfigurement even as Harry Kim comforts her with his deep understanding of life as an Ensign. Tom Paris tries to find a diplomatic solution while caring for his daughter.
The art by Marcus To is cinematic and excellent at carrying the emotions of every moment. Sisko’s pain, Tom’s concern, Damar’s preening, Harry’s empathy are all conveyed clearly. Every character is recognizable and relatable. Each page is filled with interesting pieces that form an easy tapestry around the conflict.
This book is quickly building to an all time best status. It is difficult to recall any Star Trek series ever written better than this one. The constantly great art, character moments and growing conflicts makes this a series every fan of Sisko and Sci-fi must read.
