Review: Star Wars Tag and Bink Were Here #1
Synopsis:
This issue begins with a comedic scroll which almost apologizes for this books existence, or, at least, the struggle that it took to put it together. Then we open with an Imperial ship in a similar sequence to the first movie, fourth episode: A New Hope. only with the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy green planet with its mocking expression and tongue hanging out. The only thing missing are the words Don’t Panic. However the imperial ship does have a bumper sticker that says Honk if you Love Evil! The title characters are two of the rebel soldiers who fled as the storm troopers boarded the ship. An irritated C3PO is searching for R2D2. This title almost reads like a Mad Magazine, or since this is a Marvel knock off, maybe a Crazy magazine, parody?

Kevin Rubio has his tongue planted so firmly in his cheek that he just might bite that appendage off. But he’s having fun with the tale of two rebel soldiers who have the same courage level of Scooby Doo! They are tracked down by two storm troopers and manage to overtake them through trickery and don their storm trooper uniforms as a disguise. Hoping to get away from the fleet they wind up on…The Deathstar of course! Rubio brings our anti-heroes from one tangled mess to another, while disguised as Storm Troopers they devise a plan to escape to…Well, lets just say it’s a place that may look safe but won’t be for long (no spoilers.) This title is so much fun it reminds me of the STDS9 episode where they revisited the STTOS episode The Trouble with Tribbles (Trials and Tribble-ations) Great Stuff includes watching Tag and Bink walking around the death star as scenes from the first movie are being played out, also the playful banter between the two protagonists as each of their plans fail to come together.
The artists bring about the right amount of cartoony attitude blended with the realistic attitude that makes it just slightly above a parody. The main characters are slightly over the top and the iconic characters are well imagined, yet fit in with the cartoony/realistic blend. And, just like Joe Staten did in E-Man’s brief Charlton comics run, there are sight gags galore! Starting with the aforementioned Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy homage, we see that the Deathstar houses a Big Boy restaurant. The Deathstar lights from the outside form a Dark Horse logo, keep looking true believer, there are other sight gags to be seen here. Can you find all of them?
In Conclusion, a mass confusion:
Just who is publishing Tag and Bink comics? At first glance you’d think it was part of Marvel’s continuing Star Wars titles since the logo is on the cover, but, this is just another sight gag as it is really a Dark Horse publication. And it’s a lot of fun. If you’re into parodies of sci-fi like Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy and Mad magazine type of satire then this title is for you! Are you glad that Tag and Bink are back? If so then their might be something seriously wrong with you! Just kidding this comic is a lot of fun especially for those of us that can’t get enough of George Lucas excellent Universe. *** (8.4 rating)
