Review: Survival#2
Survival #2 wastes no time re-establishing the gripping tension that was so prevalent in the explosive first issue!
Beginning with a flashback of the central character Emma’s early years and a highly questionable display of her father’s badass military-style parenting.We find Emma, her brother, and her father hiding out after fleeing the murderous stowaway vampires. The rest of the band of survivalist militia types are running for their lives in various directions, desperately trying to escape from their position in the middle of rural Alaska and the vamps who are now officially hunting them.
The tension throughout the issues as the relationship between the central family is revealed in greater depth. Sean Lewis’s writing maintains its taught brilliance. The relationships feel real, and the eerie vampiric threat is crafted beautifully as each character struggles amidst the looming danger. Much of the appeal of Vampire stories rests on darkly enigmatic blood-sucking antagonists themselves. Survivals vamps are raw and ruthless, with the look and bravado of a biker gang that gives them distinctive flavour and makes them all the more chilling.
Everetts Art keeps the finger firmly on the action pulse, and all the dank, horrific blood-curdling moments are penned to perfection.
Survival#2 continues to add a pleasing edge to the classic vampire narrative. Driven by high-energy storytelling, it firmly sets its place as the unmissable vampire action comic series you never knew you needed.
