Review: The Forever Maps #1

In 1794, a young man named John is given a map. Curious, he follows it, and when he arrives at the end, all he finds is an identical map with a new destination. This leads him to another map, and then another, and on and on. Determined to find something ”“ anything ”“ else, he continues to follow these strange maps all over the country. Decades later, he realizes that as long as he follows them, he doesn“t seem to get older”¦ and it“s not until nearly a century later that he learns when he stops, time catches up with him.

Story set in the lat 18th century about a headstrong young man named John, the son of a financial minister.Â He has his whole future mapped out for him; he going yo go to university to study law, then a life in politics, then eventually he’ll have his own family.Â But John doesn’t want that.

The plan changes one day when he saves an an old vagrant from being mauled by wild animals.Â The vagrant passes the map of to john and now John becomes obsessed.Â The big problem is that the map doesn’t lead to a treasure.Â It just leads to another map.

In the backdrop of all this is the fact that John doesn’t have all day to go treasure map hunting.Â He has obligations to his family and school.Â None the less he decides to go anyway.

An interesting wrinkle for the main character is actually his perception of time while he has been following the maps.Â While he thinks it has just been a month or two, a full year has gone by.Â The Forever Maps #1 introduces some interesting concepts, that could be metaphors for the difference between following your own path or the path that has been set out for you.

The art by Todor Hristov is fantastic, and is includes panels worthy of hanging on a wall.Â From panel to panel the pending seriousness is felt, and allows you to focus on the message.Â The cover art is fantastic and iconic.

I am high on this title and definitely can see its screen potential.Â Hopefully the some the next issues will reveal his journey and whats happens during his trek to find the maps. With the thousands of possible maps, and how it is so easy to pass from hunter to hunter I could see this series going on forever.Â Scout Comics & Entertainment has deep relationships with a bunch of TV and movie companies, as well as development and licensing deals for develops andÂ TV, film, digital and gaming.

The original printing ofÂ Forever Maps was in an 85-page graphic novel, that was solicited as part of kick-starter project.
