Review: White Night – An Adman’s Story
So, I get a lot of books every week to read and review. I enjoy the vast majority of them and, with limited time, I sometimes fail to review books that I otherwise enjoy as I balance my passion for comics with my passion for other writing projects. It is particularly painful when I get several books from big comic companies while also receiving great material from indie or lesser known companies. In those cases, I tend to do a review on the smaller books because, while I enjoy the books from companies like DC or Marvel, I think those companies often overshadow the wonderful work being done elsewhere. This title, ‘White Knight – An Adman’s Story’, is one of those works.
‘White Night – An Adman’s Story’ by Kevin Sacco (Josephine) is a biographical tale in the day of the life of Kevin’s father, a copywriter in New York City during the ‘Golden Age’ of advertising. On its face, this may not sound exciting or worth a read; a sentiment I shared before I began going through the pages. However, as I continued to read I was sucked into this story of a man making a living for his family in a New York City now gone. The tale is called ‘White Knight’ as this is the day that Kevin’s father came up with the White Knight ad campaign for Ajax, a tale he often told.
The story flows well and the sequential art is expertly done, letting the tale unfold at a natural and unhurried pace that is endearing and engrossing. The book is done in black and white with gray shading. This is an excellent choice, lending age and a nostalgic feel to this tale from the past.  The art is simple and homey, providing an air of innocence to this tale told by a son about his father.
In short, I’m touched that Kevin Sacco chose to share this story with all of us and I must admit that it has found a place in my heart. This is not the usual stuff of comic books and graphic novels yet it is every bit as important and part of the genre as any Batman or Spider-Man story. Sequential art is a powerful medium that can be used to tell any number of stories in effective ways and ‘White Knight’ is a fine example of that.
