Shero Comics Brings the Funny to Valentine’s Day in Short Film that Addresses the Treatment of Women in Hip-Hop Culture

Hip-Hop’s Misogyny Gets Checked in Witty New Comedy From Rayven Choi Films

This Valentine’s Day, award-winning writer-director and Shero Comics/Rayven Choi Films CEO, Shequeta L. Smith is releasing her latest short film “Dick Control,” starring Curtis Hamilton (“Insecure,” “The Kings of Napa”), as an Anti-Valentine’s Day special. The film is a satirical comedy that cleverly addresses the rampant misogyny in hip-hop.

In the film, Hamilton plays Richard Tye “Trigga” Simmons, a rich, jet-setting, larger-than-life rapper who sleeps with a groupie who happens to be a witch. When Tye treats her with disregard, she places a “penis curse” that can only be broken once he learns how to respect women.

The film is somewhere between comedy and fantasy and is something I wanted to release to provide some much-needed laughter in these dark times. I’m hoping that it will also create a commentary on the disposable way that women are often treated in hip-hop culture,” says Smith.

“Dick Control” comes as the next Anti-Valentine’s Day release in a tradition that Rayven Choi Films began back in 2013 when Smith launched her inaugural “comedy with commentary short film “The Takeover.” This award-winning film starred Chrystee Pharris (“Passions,” “Monogamy”) and went on to garner over 350,000 hits on social media — in addition to a successful festival run.

“Dick Control” stars Curtis Hamilton, who most recently starred in the final season of HBO’s “Insecure,” STARZ’s “Charming the Hearts of Men,” and now Oprah’s hot new series, “The Kings of Napa.” In addition to starring in “Dick Control,” Hamilton is also a producer on the project.

I was raised by strong women across the board, and I firmly believe that all women should respect themselves and never let a man objectify them. This film personifies that message and is why I wanted to be a part of it,” Hamilton said.

The rest of the “Dick Control” cast is rounded out by a talented group of newcomers: Anna Maria Morris, Casey Gardner, Kenyon Long, Michael Walton Jr. and KeNeice Musgrove. Together, they bring big laughs to ensure that this project turns heads and makes a bold statement of what happens when feminism takes on hip-hop’s misogyny.

Making a comment on hip-hop culture, in early January, Smith and her Shero Comics team launched an online campaign to find and feature the music of some of the top unsigned Black rappers across America. After receiving over two hundred submissions, seven artists were selected. The music of artists Zayy Dogg, Ty Lotto, #WordsorLess, Jay Prime, Distinguish, King Content and Jordan Blue provide the film’s soundtrack.

“Dick Control” is scheduled to be released on Monday, February 14, 2022, to Smith’s Rayven Choi YouTube Channel. It will also be featured across all social media platforms. Prior to the film’s release, an online press screening and Q&A with the entire cast will be announced in early February.
