Shero Games Launches NBA-Led Crowdfunding Campaign to Develop Mobile, PC, and Roblox Games Centering Women of Color

The highly anticipated gaming division of Shero Comics set to release female-centered games in early 2024

On a quest to even the playing field for women and girls of color in the gaming industry, Shero Games, the official gaming division of female-centered multimedia company Shero Comics, is set to launch its first crowdfunding campaign on Wednesday, November 8, 2023. With an assist from 2020 NBA All-Star and 2021 NBA Champion, Jrue Holiday, and two-time Olympic gold medalist, Lauren Holiday — who are matching up to $35,000 of what the company raises through their JLH Social Impact Fund — Shero Games is one step closer to taking on the male-dominated world of gaming.

Despite women making up 48% of all gamers, less than 6% of mainstream games feature a female protagonist. With a wealth of Black female-led comic book IPs like Rayven Choi, Squad Goals, The Legend of Cahokia, and Young Grandmaster Choi to pull from, Shero Games plans to bridge this gap by building games based on its own library of inclusive stories and will use the funds raised to enlist a game developer to bring its mobile, PC, and Roblox games to life that feature women and girls of color as powerful protagonists.

Following the crowdfunding campaign, which runs from November 8th to December 22nd, the first two games from Shero Games will be:

  • SheroCon, a Roblox gaming experience that replicates the real-life magic of the annual Shero Comics Convention, an event that spotlights and celebrates women and their contributions to pop culture and geekdom. This year, SheroCon has been invited to partner with Los Angeles Comic Con, giving the game a timely twist.
  • Rayven Choi: Reaper’s Run, a Subway Surfers-style mobile game based on the Korean-African American graphic novel Rayven Choi. The game features the iconic protagonist Rayven running from a Reaper, a formidable hitman, through a visually stunning interpretation of ancient Korea.

Perks for supporters of the campaign include early access to the games, tickets to the future release parties, free in-game power-ups, and themed wallpapers. They’ll also gain access to Shero Games merchandise such as t-shirts, graphic novels, and gaming headsets.

“Though I’ve been a gamer my whole life, it wasn’t until I exhibited at my first comic con in 2016 when a developer approached me about turning Rayven Choi into a video game that the idea of building games landed on my radar,” said Shequeta L. Smith, award-winning writer and founder of Shero Comics. Now with several more IPs under my belt, I think it’s the perfect time to make video games with Sheroes at the epicenter.”

In addition to partnering with Los Angeles Comic Con in December 2023, the Shero Games team is also celebrating Smith’s nomination for the Distinguished Leadership of the Year Award from the Regional Black Chamber of Commerce of San Fernando Valley.
