Spoiler Free Review-Polar Volume One: Came From The Cold Hardcover (2nd Edition)

It’s a cold winter over at Dark Horse, and the only thing that can keep you warm is Polar!!! I am unfamiliar with Polar for the most part, but with the movie being made by Netflix and streaming now, today is a good day as any to talk about this beautiful book. Before I continue, I want to send a special thank you to Dark Horse for making this review possible. So if you are unfamiliar with how I review, I break things down into story, artwork, and final thoughts. I do this without any spoiling, because reading a comic should be an experience that you should savor and enjoy!

Story:

As it relates to story, Victor Santos crafts a noir story that flows nice. The pace here moves along great, and is well crafted and enjoyable. The characters you encounter have a sense of mystery, but what is presented on the page is never dull or boring. Dialogue feels important, and has you anxiously turning the page to see and process how the story is going to play out! The characters are fully fleshed out to my taste, and that’s not an easy thing to do at any level. I commend Mr. Santos for writing such a strong story that has you wanting to learn more, and wondering just what the hell is going to happen next! In closing, this story is a must read, and creates a fun journey in comics that are lacking.

Artwork:

A great story is always great, but when you can translate words in pictures, it is something that should not go unnoticed! I really love the artwork for this graphic novel! It has a beautiful feel and look to it. To describe it, would be a great injustice done by mean. However, in a simple explanation, it is almost like the Walking Dead and Sin City had a baby, and then that baby matured in a beautiful blossom! Do yourself a favor when flipping through the story, soak in the great artwork here that is presented to you. It’s a special treat to look at and enjoy. The other beautiful thing here is the fact that the pictures illustrated here add that special cherry on top that give the story an extra flavor of goodness.

Final Thoughts:

Overall this edition of Polar is a great way to immerse yourself into the world that Polar exists in. It is a great starting point that instantly wants you to find more and dive into that. At the 20 dollar price point you get 130 pages of great story telling, and tons of sketches, and even an additional story beyond the main. Mr. Santos and the team at Dark Horse are giving you something really fun and really special, and that is something I admire. Plus, it is now a Netflix original movie, so if you can support that as well. Polar is usually a word that is associated with the cold, but this book is heating up into something that isn’t shy at keeping you warm in terms of satisfaction. 5/5!
