Movie Review: Black Panther

WOW!. Last years comic book moviesÂ started with a completely different kind of Superhero movie in Logan and the first superhero film this year is a completely different one as well! Just when you thought originality was wearing thin amongst our spandex clad protagonists comes this wholly unique vehicle. The introduction brings us all the way back to the first Black Panther and we see how the nation of Wakanda flourished and grew. The nation itself is so well imagined that we almost believe that it’s a real South African Country (except for all the sci-fi gadgets of course.) Every character in this film is well-developed and we see the intense conflict brewing. You sympathize with the antagonists as well as the protagonists as each person believes they are on the side of right in their struggle for a land that they love. In fact every character is so well-developed you can relate to even the most minor of characters in this film. Truly there are no small parts, only small actors.

Chadwick Boseman is on point as T’Challa and brings a certain conviction to the role as he attempts to steer his beloved country in the right direction. Michael B. Jordan sometimes hams it up as a rival to the throne, but overall his performance is also on point, he plays an Americanized Wakandan that believes he has the right to govern the land as he is also a prince from Wakanda and proves it. Jordan has likened the relationship of his character and T’Challa to that of Professor X and Magneto, both wanting the same goals, but see different ways of attaining said goals. The action is great, the effects are great and the film is a great way to start Superhero comic book movies for 2018.

I was worried about how this film would come out. You see the Black Panther comic book was my second favorite title growing up, I literally cried when they cancelled it (I wasn’t even a teenager, give me a break!) You see, my favorite title growing up was The Fantastic 4, and we see where those films went. But I should have known better, In the capable hands of the MCU, this film came together just fine and brought me back to those golden days of yesteryear when I would be under my blankets with a flashlight after my mother told me “lights out.” And now, since Disney bought out Fox for about 52 billion dollars, we may get the Fantastic 4 done right too, finally! And although there is a good amount of humor in the film, it never borders on high camp. Everyone in the film takes their roles and the script seriously. All in all, one of my favorite movie going experiences, ever! ***** (9.8 rating)
