The Old White Dude Review of Captain Marvel

Synopsis:

One of the most controversial films ever released. YouTube creators are bending over backwards to condemn this movie while SJW“s are saying that anyone who doesn“t like this film are “sexists”“ Brie Larson“s comments at a recent awards show only added fuel to the fire and I wrote my own column concerning this, plus did my own YouTube show on the history of female leads in movies based on comics, but now, the movie itself is finally here! Can this old white dude be subjective in reviewing a movie that stars Brie Larson? I“m going to try.

It“s 1995 and the Kree and the Skrull are in the middle of an intergalactic war. Vers (Captain Marvel) realizes that certain Skrulls have landed on Earth and follows them there. Of course, she meets up with Col. Nick Fury (Jackson) and agent Coulson (Gregg). I was glad to see Coulson back, but, unfortunately, his presence is barely felt in this film. The chase is on and, a few neat twists and turns later, the show is over. We do get to see a young Monica Rambeau (Akbar) who grows up to be an African-American female Captain Marvel. The story has Danvers (Larson) and Maria Rambeau (Lynch), Monica“s mother as co-pilots in the air force before Danvers disappeared. Yon Rigg (Law) is Danvers mentor and trainer, the Obi-Wan Kenobi of this film.

The film is fun and the banter between Jackson and Larson is clever and entertaining. The action rules this picture and is the center of the story. But there isn“t really much else to recommend it. Before you rant and rave that I“m a Brie Larson hating sexist (I“m not) the problems with the film aren“t Larson“s fault. The script doesn“t have her doing much but kicking ass. There are attempts to show a human side to her through flashbacks, but as soon as they show something that might make us care about the character, they immediately cut back to the present or into some action scene. Part of the problem is that she“s an amnesiac and that alone makes it difficult to relate to her. Yes, they try to give us that moment when she remembers who she is, but it doesn“t really do enough to flesh out the character. But Larson does do a great job with what she“s been given, I just wish she“d been given more! It“s a by the numbers action/sci-fi/superhero movie and it“s all been done better before this. There are a couple of characters who aren“t what they appear to be to keep the mystery going and yes, the cat steals the show. MCU completest, such as I, will be pleased, but little more. I have no desire to see it again, unlike most MCU movies which I see several times at the box office. I don“t know what non-comic book fans are going to make of it. But It is worth a look, if only once. **1/2 (6.8 rating)
