MOVIE REVIEW: Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising

The sequel to the comedy from a few years back see the Radner’s ready to move out of their house, they are having trouble understanding the American Escrow system, and need 30 days of peace and quiet to get their house sold.  Add to that a child who keeps finding her Moms Vibrator and a Sorority moving in next door and you’ve got a case of comedy chuckles.

I may be overly generous with the 3, but I did laugh at this film, I can’t deny that, and  these days there are precious few moments to laugh at.  I was going to give this a 2 out of five as it’s basically the same movie as the first film.  To be green and kind to the planet they have recycled some of the jokes, so less of a carbon footprint.  In Ireland this film is called Bad Neighbours 2, while in America I think it’s called Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising.

Before seeing this film I watched the film Mustang, the review should be around this site somewhere, and that was hard going but brilliant to watch, maybe I needed to chuckle a little.  The talent involved know how to make you laugh, this can’t be denied, and it’s probably one of the few films that I like Rose Byrne in.  Seth Rogen plays, well he plays Seth Rogen, he has a limited range but last year in the Steve Jobs film he managed to surprise me with his acting.  His character range in comedies does little to push him.  Zac Efron reprises his role as the no hope loser from the first film who still has no clear future ahead of him.  Now with his best friend from College about to get married to his boyfriend things have really been thrown against the fan.  Joining the returning cast is Chloe Grace Moretz playing the young college student who wants to let her hair down and party.  I like Moretz but she can do better than this.  The film even has a Rebel Wilson wannabe playing the crazy chubby friend, but you just think about Ms. Wilson.

When the film is on Seth and Rose you think about the first film, when it focuses on Chloe and the Sorority you think about Pitch Perfect, with more drugs and drink.  When the two clash you know what is going to happen and can write the film yourself.

So should you go see this film?  The answer is… How was your Day? Do you need a break from reality? Do you need to laugh?  If the answer to these questions is Yes, then yes.  If you enjoyed the first film, which I kind of did, it had its moments, then yes.  If you are going to the cinema and expecting something new and fresh from a good comedy team then you are only going to find recycled jokes and nothing that moves the genre forward.  But here is the thing.  I’ve had a terrible few weeks, health and some other things, and this film made me laugh, I needed that.  We have to remember that not every film has to move the art form forward.  Films are what bring us together, in the World where commentators and politicians are pointing out our differences left, right, and everything between, we need these types of comedies to come out and go with a group and just laugh.

While I hope that we don’t have a trilogy on our hands, I would gladly go back to the cinema and watch this with a few mates.  Although I would prefer to watch while drinking a few beers at home and having a night in, I am getting old, so that’s another reason for the three rather than the two.  If a film is worth watching in the cinema and then again at home it’s a keeper, it just needs to crack a smile on the face of a guy who doesn’t want to laugh, which it did.  What else can one ask for from a comedy?
