MOVIE REVIEW: Ocean’s 8

The all female heist version of Ocean’s 11 sees Danny’s sister Debbie wanting to pull of the biggest job that she has ever attempted.  It seems that Danny is dead and this is one of the motivations that she has to attempt the robbery of a 6lb necklace from Cartier.  To do this she can’t do it alone, and after spending nearly six years in prison she has to rely on old friend Lou.  There is also a little revenge to be had and a few jokes along the way.

Ocean’s 11, both the original and the remake are fun heist movies, the sequels of the remake you can take or leave, but there are a lot of cool movie moments from the original and remake that make you want to go back to them time and time again.

Here Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Rihanna, Helena Bonham Carter, and Awkwafina take on the robbery of one of the most guarded necklaces in the world.  They are going to do this at the Met Gala, New Yorks party of parties, against impossible odds.  All the cast manage to bring you into this fun robbery film with characters that, while they are not as developed as the Ocean’s 11 characters, are still instantly likeable, apart from Hathaway who plays an IT girl who the gang are using to accomplish their goal.  Joining the Women is Richard Armitage and James Corden.  Now I’ve told everyone and had T-shirts made about how much I hate James Corden, but he’s fine here, while Armitage plays the sleazy ex of Bullocks Debbie character and does so in a way that you instantly hate the character but still like the actor.

There are elements of the film that are taken directly from the remake of Ocean’s 11, the opening scene is almost a direct copy paste, and you forgive it.  In fact you forgive a lot in this film.  The script isn’t great, not a polished as the remake, and the depth of characters and drama in the film is at the bare minimum to make it worth your time.  However I didn’t go into see this film with a high expectation, I went in wanting a Friday Morning movie that entertained me for two hours and that is exactly what I got.  Most of the negative, well really negative, critiques of the this film must have gone in expecting that they were going to get something that was higher than they could have done with the remake and the sequels.  That was never going to happen.  What we do get is a fun movie, and if you like the heist movie genre then this is for you.  It’s far-fetched, with a few good references to the remake by cameo appearances, and just plain fun.

There is little else to say about it, I’d watch this happily again and again, and if I wanted something on in the background while having a bad day at home.  Keep your expectations low and you’ll have a great time in the cinema, go in expecting the ultimate heist movie, well you’re just shooting yourself in the foot.
