MOVIE REVIEW: OLD

Shamalyan decides once more to connect with the comic book world, except instead of a superhero trilogy, a slice-of-life mythos story in “Sandcastle” is up for grabs here in this satisfying adaptation known as “Old”.

Mystery shrouds the entire film from start to finish, and one can walk out feeling as if they have aged; as the intro feels innocent & naivete , while once the run time completes one can only feel alert & jaded.

While the mystery of the island and it’s visitors is the main premise of “Old”, the film allows itself to be filled in with various other subplots that allows the audience to take their eye of the ball for a bit & question themselves.

Mental disorders, ethnic stereotypes, the genetic study of melanin, the ills and the praises belonging to the pharmaceutical industry, superficiality, the importance of relationships & family history – all of these topics are touched on thoroughly and with an entertainment value that brought about often both horror and humor at the same junction.

My only issue with the film was some of the camera angles that Shamalyan used to draw focus on certain characters. This issue led to other characters being cropped out even while they were delivering dialogue. But that’s a minor hump that should not discourage “Old” from being checked out.
