MOVIE REVIEW: Trolls

In this world of computer animated movies, it seems like some movies hit the mark, and others are destined to end up in the $5 bin. Especially when it comes to movies that are made for families to take their kids to; Well Trolls is just that movie. Based off of the troll dolls with the crazy hair which began back in 1959, they made brief comebacks in the 70’s and the 90’s (which I remember because both my sisters had a plethora of them) this movie brings an original story around toys that have been around for 57 years.

In this world, you have two societies: The Trolls, and The Bergens. The trolls are happy and singing and dancing and bringing all the joy that you would expect, where the bergen are the miserable, can’t sing or dance and have a desire to eat trolls. The bergen believe that the only way that they can be happy is if they eat trolls.

The story surrounds two characters, Poppy, who is voiced by Anna Kendrick, and Branch who is voiced by Justin Timberlake. Poppy is the typical overly happy troll who loves to sing and dance and also is the princess of the trolls. Branch on the other hand, well lets just say he was my favorite. He is incredibly pessimistic and at times just a downright downer, but it worked to bring that chemistry to the story and the characters. Poppy and Branch must go on an adventure to save the rest of the trolls who were captured by the Bergen before they’re all eaten. It’s the typical kid movie story and is definitely one that any kid is going to love. The different characters are ones that you know the toy industry is loving because this will be another set of toys that kids are going to want.

What really makes this movie different from other kid movies was how well they incorporated the music into the film. Justin Timberlake in typical fashion played a major role in the music of the film. Now whether you like that style of music or not, at the end of the day you have to appreciate how well the music is worked into the movie. In fact, it was honestly the most redeeming factor of the movie for me. It’s not just the style of the music, but it’s a key component of the story.

The other aspect that was fantastic was the detail in the animation. Dreamworks animation did a fantastic job to capture incredible detail with the characters and the environment around them. There are scenes where the story is told using characters constructed from felt, and then when it goes back to the main characters they still have that high quality of detail where you see the strands within the fabric that the characters are made out to look like. All I can honestly say is if you have a 4K TV with a 4K player, this movie is going to look pretty spiffy.

If you’re looking for a fun movie to take your kids to, then I would recommend this one. The story while yet corny in nature, still hits you in the feels with that warm happy feeling, and or a good time with the music. The kids will love it, at least mine did for sure, and so did every other kid in the theater, but it was a great time nonetheless.
