Movie Review: Aquaman
Synopsis:
We go all the way to my home state of Maine where lighthouse keeper Thomas Currey (Morrison) rescues the queen of Atlantis (Kidman) They fall in love, have a child whom they name Arthur, and live happily ever after…until the Atlanteans arrive and the queen has to return home. Arthur stays with his father but is trained by Atlantean Nudis Vulko (Dafoe.) The Kingdom of Atlantis is being ruled by Arthur’s half-brother Orm (Wilson) who has a power lust and wants to wage war against the surface world. Neurus (Lundgren) swears allegiance to Orm but his daughter, Mera (Heard) rebels against her father and journey’s to the surface world in order to recruit Arthur to take on Orm and become the King of Atlantis.
Review:
Finally, another movie in the DCEU that gets it mostly right and will be competitive with the MCU. James Wan has found the spirit of Aquaman and takes a script that could have been one great big mess and makes it flow smoothly. There are a couple of moments where it drags, but this is mostly an awesome action packed popcorn movie full of adventure and fun. Atlantis is breath-taking and the CGI is masterfully done. The actors get to perform and aren’t drowned (forgive the pun) out by the effects. Black Mantis (Abdul-Mateen II) looks terrifying and is a more formidable foe than Ares was in Wonder Woman and definitely more so than Steppenwolf was in Justice League. He does become borderline stereotypical, but otherwise the performance is solid. Some of the humor seems a little forced, but for the most part works well. All in all I had fun, which is what I look for in a Superhero movie. ****1/2 (9.4 rating)
