WonderCon 2024: Boy Kills World Interviews

This year, Saturday afternoon at WonderCon found me in the basement under 200 North. I had just skipped early from the Boy Kills World teaser and panel in order to set up on the press line to interview some of the talented people associated with this upcoming film, (Boy Kills World is being released in US theaters on April 26th of this year). As we waited it became apparent that the cast were delayed as they answered fan questions and this was a good thing – one that I would find on the press line as everyone involved with the movie was very gracious with their time and genuinely nice to talk to.

(looks fort the links at the bottom of the article) I must also share that my camera was acting up and so I lost portions of some of the interviews to my chagrin. Regardless, what I am sure you will enjoy what I was able to memorialize.

My first interview was with Famke Janssen (X-Men, Lord of Illusions, Goldeneye) and Jessica Rothe (Happy Death Day, Forever My Girl). These two glamorous ladies were extremely gracious and actually came back to film another question with me after I realized I had lost some of my footage. We talked about Famke’s desire to separate her personal and professional life as she revealed that she jealously guards her personal life and tries to keep a wall between that life and her professional life. She also talked about getting into character and how those characters can be difficult if not impossible to shed once the shooting stops. Famke Janssen plays the main villain of Boy Kills World, Hilda Van Der Koy. Jessica Rothe plays an enigmatic character named June 27 in the film. While it’s not clear what role this character will play she revealed that she received intense martial arts training from fellow cast member Yayan Ruhlan and this is one of the things she enjoyed the most during the filming process. I asked her what her future plans are and she explained that she has enjoyed her film “journey” through various genres and would love to do a science fiction film or other genre next.

My second interview was with Executive Producer Sam Raimi and Director Moritz Mohr. Raimi is a very humble and soft spoken man who deferred to his younger companion – putting him in the spotlight as he enjoyed watching first time director Mohr in the spotlight of his first feature film. It was very obvious that Raimi is very proud of his collaboration with Mohr and with Mohr’s vision that has produced this film. The two men opened up on how they met and they embarked on an eight year journey to get this film made. Mohr, who is an avid gamer and has stated that video games were an inspiration for this film, dished on what games might have had an influence on this film. I finished up my interview with the two of them by asking Raimi about his professional journey as a young director on Evil Dead to mentor on Boy Kills World. His answer was very touching and spoke well of the incredibly talented man. Off camera, but not off the record, Raimi shared that he’s eager to direct a Marvel movie but has yet to be approached by Disney . Let’s hope that changes in the future.

Finally, the party came to me as I got to interview Shalto Copley (District 9, Elysium, A-Team), Isaiah Mustafa (It Chapter Two) and Bret Gelman (Stranger Things). Shalto and Bret play Hilda Van Der Koy’s brothers – Glen and Gideon Van Der Koy. Isaiah Mustafa plays a one name force of nature named Benny in the film. We were running short on time at this point but the three of them were incredibly fun to interview and allowed me to ask them some off the wall questions that they rolled with. Mustafa told us just how much ass, from 1-10, that Benny kicks in the film. Shalto opined on what it’s like to go from Murdoch in the A-Team to the “face” of his family in this film. Finally, Bret talked about the fuzzy jacket that defined his character and his relationship with it during and after filming.

This was a great experience and I hope you all enjoy the video clips from the interviews. The film itself looks incredibly fun, John Wick on acid with an extra help of insanity and Looney Tunes thrown in. I certainly plan on checking this movie out and I hope you do as well.
