Web-Comic Review: Roll Initiative

G“Day Crusaders,

This is Dodgy in the mix bringing you a web-comic titled Roll Initiative by Danny Allain (creator, writer and inker) and Peyton Freeman (colorist and letterer).

Okay, I agree it has that Lord of the Rings, Dungeon and Dragons feel upon first glance. You“re not wrong and what the heck.. It“s the reason I was drawn to this book from the get go.

We are introduced to three protagonists as they embark on their journey.. Essen Windborne who is a young Elven Wizard who appears to bale out her older comrades out of trouble often. Cyril Silvertoes a bow wielding Halfling Rangerwhom I“m extremely jealous towards, Dammit!”¦ I wanna ride a giant Ferret. And lastly the brawn (definitely not the brain!) Slate a badass Dwarven Fighter.

The prior mentions trio come have a scroll-like map in their grasps, there does this lead to. Well you will need to jump into Webtoon to find out!

Allain“s art is very clean and fresh, partnered with Freeman“s coloring makes it good to better! I felt there is a hint of late 70“s and early 80“s Rankin and Bass art style that“s dear to my heart! One thing I loved was the facial expressions of each character.  On some pages or chapters they are called in the Webtoon had some significant pixelation which makes the art look patchy.. Thankfully it didn“t throughout the chapters.

The dialogue is fun to read, as Slate is the muscle in the group he“s also the curious one who never looks before he leaps.. Either your cringe at what he does (generally to himself) and what he says as well. One thing I liked is that no character is indispensable, even if it is a funny book there are moments of hardship which made it much more worth a look.

Danny Allain advised there will be a Kickstarter for issue number 2 of Roll Iniitiative, before you jump on that bandwagon. Do ya“self a favor and check it out!

I asked Danny, what inspired him to write Roll Initiative : “I just wanted to tell a funny, adventurous story. With Goblins, Dragons, and the Situation it brings. There are some fun tongue in cheek D&D humor.”“

Then I asked, which character do you relate to the most and why?: “I hope that all the characters including the villain, who hasn“t been revealed yet, are relatable. Essen is young, and hasn“t seen much of the world yet, besides from what she read of it, and family pressure weighs heavy on her. Slate has had a hard life and is looking to exist, and to do any good he can along the way. Cyril is more laid back. He just handles life situation by situation and trusts luck will help him out.”“
