WRESTLING REVIEW: NXT – In Your House XXX
Toxic Attraction put all their belts up on the line on the latest NXT premium live event and the results were a reflection of the ridiculous amount of locker room cuts made in NXT over the past year as Attraction retained their belts unanimously.
Though it was entertaining to see Chance and Carter perform tag magic throughout their match against Dolin and Jayne (using the ropes to their advantage primarily and flipping their opponents to the point it looked more like they were partners than competitors)it looks like it’s time for a breakup; as big as the spear Carter pulled off to keep the night’s match going. At this point, a name change isn’t enough to make Chance (formerly Cantazaro) as interesting as her partner. Those two work in the same fashion as Dolin and Jayne, where Jayne is the more interesting one of the pair performing impromptu dances and signature cannonballs seemingly from out of nowhere, while Dolin is the pure striker to Chance’s high flyer.
Out of the two, what Chance does is more technical than Dolin, but a program between Carter and Jayne would just be fun for audiences, without it being forced – like so much of the entertainment is on this sports entertainment show. Carter eating the pin after getting rocked in the face outside the ropes by Jayne worked as a genuine upset. Surely, in the future Carter can focus on getting vengeance on Jayne which would set up a clinic of a singles match! Talent like that just writes itself.
Xia Li needs to come back to NXT. She’s on Smackdown losing six pack challenges to veteran’s who need to be put out to pasture. Tian Sha needs to come back, especially since a loud portion of the WWE Universe likes to segregate talent by their ethnicities, LDF has T-shirts now, one can only imagine what numbers Tian Sha would do if they hadn’t been split up by creative last year.
With that said, the WWE Universe can more than agree that Wendy Choo was not a credible challenger for Mandy Rose at In Your House ’22. Barrett perfectly summed it up on commentary during the program , “little girls can do what they want, this is a grown ass woman’s division”.
Starting things off with a slingshot (more Bart Simpson, less Rob Van Dam), and seeing the recap of silly string and water guns in the dream sequence before the match, I couldn’t help but have a simmering animosity towards Choo’s goofy character that rose to a boil by the time she put Rose in a creative sleeper, almost costing the champ the match. Choo pulled off some amazing cartwheels and sold Rose’s blunt blows, but she couldn’t get over her gimmick. The childlike shenanigans were just too big for her and NXT as a whole. NXT needs a champion that isn’t a clown, and Choo is such a great actress. She either needs to revive the Mei Ying character for Tian Sha reunion or find a new gimmick because she deserves better than having to be a clown week in and week out. The Breakout Tournament finals could have been held at In Your House. The upcoming tag tournament could have been unified over the past couple of weeks and a match for that tourney could have been held at this event as well.
WWE has spread it’s women’s division thin. More faith needs to be put into the newer crop of women than old workhorses like Natalya and (now at this point) Mandy Rose, especially on NXT, a show dedicated to upstarts defining their craft!
Two women’s matches a night isn’t enough. WWE needs to fill their locker room up and put those already on the bench on screen to meet this demand, because those that are in tag teams (Carter, Jayne) are ready to shine as singles stars and those that are on the bench are ready for an introduction to the WWE Universe that is more than a squash match.
