Wandering Cat’s Cage: Akane Torikai Drops a Dystopian Manga That Gets Under Your Skin!

WEPAAAAAAAA, MANGA CRUSADERS! THIS ONE IS NOT HERE TO HOLD YOUR HAND—IT’S HERE TO GET INSIDE YOUR HEAD!
Some manga invite you into a fantasy world and say, ‘Enjoy the ride.’ Wandering Cat’s Cage looks you dead in the eye and asks, ‘What happens when the world decides your body, your family and your future are no longer yours to control?’ Yeah, baby. We’re going there.
Akane Torikai, the acclaimed creator behind Sensei’s Pious Lie and Saturn Return, brings her dystopian science-fiction story to English-language readers through Fantagraphics’ Takumigraphics imprint, in partnership with Mangasplaining Extra. Translated by Jocelyne Allen, the 334-page hardcover arrives October 27, 2026.

In this unsettling near future, reproduction is tightly regulated. Life inside the prosperous City comes with security, but also strict rules. Outside its boundaries, freedom carries a much steeper price. That divide is the beating heart of Torikai’s story.
Our central character, Sanada, is a young acupuncturist living beyond the City’s reach. She shares a life with the mysterious Reiho and a group of women who have found one another on society’s margins. When Reiho is taken into the City’s reproduction program, Sanada faces a brutal choice: accept the system’s power or risk everything to challenge it.

Now THAT is a premise that doesn’t need a cape, a laser cannon or a giant monster to make the stakes feel enormous. The conflict is personal. The danger comes from institutions and relationships, from what people are told they must sacrifice to survive.
What intrigues me about Wandering Cat’s Cage is the way its speculative setting opens the door to very human questions. Who gets to define a family? What does safety mean if you surrender choice? Can a society call itself prosperous when some of its people are treated as disposable?

Those aren’t questions with tidy, one-panel answers. And that’s exactly why a 334-page graphic narrative has room to dig deep. Torikai’s reputation for emotionally complex material makes this an especially compelling release for readers who want manga that challenges them.
Don’t mistake the subject matter for a promise of easy entertainment. This looks like the kind of book that asks you to sit with uncomfortable ideas, then keeps the conversation going long after you’ve closed the cover. That’s valuable storytelling, too.
