Advance Review: We Found A Monster TP

In the grand old tradition of maybe Calvin and Hobbes and more relatively, Diary of a Wimpy Kid comes a new book that looks at life through a young lad’s eyes and the very unusual way that he looks at the various aspects of his world.

Casey is a pretty normal kid, well if you call having a sock version of himself normal.  On top of all this he is a monster expert, living as he does with several monsters.  Literally, he may have a skeleton in his closet.  There is also the other influences in his life; his dad, his class mates and the teachers that make up his daily existence.  Along comes a new friend, Zandra, who has a bit of a monster problem herself.  Casey has a chance to help a friend and maybe help him self in the process.

The book is written and drawn by Kirk Scroggs of The Secret Spiral of Swap Kid fame.  Here, Scroggs gets to monster-opomorphise aspects of Casey’s life.  It’s a great, charming way to engender Casey to the reader.  There are some funny moments along with some sharp writing; I love She-Bats response to the “blood” shake Casey brings her.  With the introduction of Zandra, Casey has a running mate, with both of them having their “monsters’ to deal with.  Art wise, it’s cartoony, it’s clever and like the writing, the art has charm, and grace.  Yes, it is not my normal cup of tea, but then I don’t think I am the target audience.  I am of course a big fan of Calvin and Hobbes so the idea of a child having monsters doesn’t seem that strange to me.  I love the coloured pencil style of colors, evocative of the all the art I still manage to sneak into notepads instead of meeting notes.  Finally, letters are provided by Steve Wands who has a lot of fun playing in the way less than serious comic book.

We Found A Monster is the sort of book, that if it catches the right frame of mind will leave you with a tear in your smile and a warm glow in your heat.  Who could ask for more?

We Found A Monster is due in shops on January 13th 2021.

I am a long time comic book fan, being first introduced to Batman in the mid to late 70's. This led to a appreciation of classic artists like Neal Adams and Jim Aparo. Moving through the decades that followed, I have a working knowledge of a huge raft of characters with a fondness for old school characters like JSA and The Shadow

Currently reading a slew of Bat Books, enjoying a mini Marvel revival, and the host of The Definative Crusade and Outside the Panels whilst also appearing on No-Prize Podcast on the Undercover Capes Podcast Network
