Apex Comics Group Adapting Classic ColecoVision Video Games for Comic Books

Apex Comics Group has partnered with ColecoVision for three comic-book series celebrating the 40th anniversary of that video game platform — bringing these classic games to comics for the first time. The Kickstarter campaign for the debut title, ColecoVision Cosmic Avengerlaunches today.

“The most exciting part of working with Apex Comics Group is watching talented artists transform iconic characters into modern depictions with expanded storylines,” said ColecoVision partner Chris Cardillo.

ColecoVision Cosmic Avenger follows Jordan Armstrong, a human raised in an alien civilization fighting an interplanetary war. Adopted by the top fighter pilot of the planet, he now battles against an infringing race of monsters. The alien woman Lain, his chief weapons officer and second-in-command, brings armaments experience to complement Armstrong’s dedication to duty — and a forbidden romance that complicates it. Through themes of love, sacrifice and the experience of war, Armstrong strives to save his adopted home.

“We take very seriously the opportunity and the responsibility for shepherding these classic ColecoVision properties into comics and other media,” said Apex Comics Group publisher Mariano Nicieza. “We played these ColecoVision games back in the day and can’t wait for fans to see new stories that take off from the spirit of the originals.”

Writer Mariano Nicieza (Phazer UniverseWilliam Shatner’s War Chronicles) has created brand-new worlds and characters for ColecoVision Cosmic AvengerWalter Figueroa, known for his work on Kolchak: The Night Stalker by Moonstone Books, is the penciler bringing the stories to life with inker Pete Botsis (Roger Zelazny’s “The Game of Blood and Dust” for Marvel Comics’ Epic Illustrated). Reid has portrayed such characters as Black Cat, Vampirella, Red Sonja and others as a special guest at the San Diego Comic-Con, New York Comic-Con, London Super Con and more.
