Gambit’s past comes roaring back this July in GAMBIT: WANTED!, a five-issue retro limited series from co-creator Chris Claremont and artist Robert Gill.
This July, Marvel fans are getting a front-row seat to the untold chapter that helped shape one of the coolest mutants to ever charge a card and steal a scene. GAMBIT: WANTED! dives deep into Remy LeBeau’s dangerous past, tracing his path from slick New Orleans thief to full-fledged mutant hero before he officially joined the X-Men.
Legendary X-Men architect Chris Claremont returns to the era that helped define mutant storytelling, this time turning the spotlight back on one of his most beloved and mysterious co-creations. Joined by acclaimed artist Robert Gill (Dungeons of Doom, X-Force), Claremont delivers a five-issue retro thriller that explores Gambit’s final adventure before taking his place among Marvel’s mightiest mutants.
Back in New Orleans after crossing paths with the X-Men, Gambit finds himself pulled between two worlds. He is not quite ready to walk away from his old life, his old crew, and the city that made him. But when a violent anti-mutant threat starts tearing through New Orleans, staying on the sidelines stops being an option. Suddenly, the stakes go sky-high, the city turns into a battlefield, and Gambit is forced to make the kind of choice that changes everything.
And yeah, it gets even crazier.
With enemies closing in from every angle and danger flooding the streets, GAMBIT: WANTED! stacks the deck with deadly new threats, familiar villains, and the kind of tension that keeps readers flipping pages like their lives depend on it. This is not just another Gambit story. This is the missing link in his legend.
TARGET: REMY LEBEAU!
Get ready, mes amis, because the Ragin’ Cajun is heading home, and home has never looked this dangerous. Set during the period when Gambit returned Storm to what remained of the X-Men, this series reveals the trial that pushed him toward joining the team for the very first time. Someone is hunting mutants in New Orleans, and when Bullseye enters the picture with Gambit in his sights, all bets are off. Expect speed, swagger, chaos, and one brutally kinetic showdown.
GAMBIT: WANTED! continues Chris Claremont’s fan-favorite tradition of revisiting and expanding key corners of X-Men history, following retro hits like Wolverine and Kitty Pryde, X-Treme X-Men, and 2022’s Gambit series. For longtime X-fans, this is another major piece of the puzzle. For Gambit fans, this is straight-up required reading.
On what motivated him to revisit the Ragin’ Cajun again, Claremont said, “I enjoy returning to Gambit because when I first created him, I never had much of a chance to build his backstory. I gave him the dichotomy of being both a hero and a thief, a conflict that creates a fertile patch for stories. GAMBIT: WANTED is set when he first meets the X-Men, and gives me a chance to explore why he decided to give up his unfettered life doing as he wished in New Orleans, becoming bound to this group of heroes, dramatically changing his life’s course.”
Artist Robert Gill is just as fired up.
“Getting the chance to work on a Gambit book with Chris was a complete surprise, and it continues to be a surreal experience,” Gill said. “Chris’s name is iconic and one that surrounded my early days of reading comics. I’ve always thought Gambit was one of the coolest and mysterious X-Men characters, and despite more than eight years drawing comics for Marvel, I’ve almost never drawn him… until now!”
Visually, this one is bringing the heat too. Fans can look forward to a main cover by Leinil Francis Yu, slick Wanted Poster-style variant covers by Phil Noto, and a first look at Robert Gill’s interior artwork that looks ready to hit with all the energy and attitude a Gambit story deserves.
Bottom line? If you have ever wanted more of Gambit’s early days, more mutant drama, more New Orleans flavor, and more Claremont-era X-Men magic, GAMBIT: WANTED! looks ready to deal a winning hand this July.
