GUNGNIR, the genre-bending publishing house known for pushing creative boundaries, founded by visionary creator Matthew Medney, today unveiled its next major literary project: Wild North, a nautical sci-fi action novel set in the future Arctic from TV writer Eric Phillips (known for For All Mankind, The Umbrella Academy).
Wild North imagines a future where the arctic ice has melted and a geo-political race for untapped resources devolves into warfare to defend oil claims. Based on a screenplay from Phillips described as “Mad-Max meets The Last Ship,” the story follows a US ship that is forced to survive with an eco-terrorist group sabotaging oil claims. As international law crumbles and warfare ensues, they’ll discover that the new world order is not what it seems, and what lies north of the sixty-sixth parallel is the key.
“I’ve always loved hard sci-fi with bold messages, and I’m excited about the way Gungnir is championing both of those things. I’m thrilled to have Wild North be a part of it. It’s packed with ideas I’ve been researching for years, as well as some creative and harrowing extrapolations on how all of these ideas may collide in the near future.” Stated Eric.
Phillips will be working with editor Jim Krueger (New York Times bestselling author and Eisner Award Winner), for a release in Winter 2027. GUNGNIR is a distributed publisher of Macmillan Publishers. Phillips draws on his experience writing for iconic genre television — including Netflix’s cult hit The Umbrella Academy and Apple’s critically acclaimed sci-fi drama For All Mankind.
“At GUNGNIR, we exist to push storytelling forward, and Wild North is the perfect example of that,” said Matthew Medney, Founder and Publisher of GUNGNIR. “Eric and I share a deep passion for great sci-fi, and Wild North is channeling that love for the Battlestar Galacticas of sci-fi past. Combined with his experience writing on some of the best genre shows streaming, Wild North will be as cinematic as it is deeply human.”
GUNGNIR will support Wild North with a full-scale marketing and release campaign, including early teaser excerpts, exclusive fan previews, and special editions. These types of creative fan extras are what garnered Phillips accolades as a contributor to the Emmy-winning emerging media and interactive programming segments for Apple TV’s For All Mankind. The team is committed to giving the novel reach beyond traditional genre boundaries — planting it as a flagship in GUNGNIR’s expanding catalog of visionary storytelling.
