The arc begins with Zartus in the distant past surveying a slaughter on Ilvayx by the scarred Vintra. Vintra was an outsider who infiltrated the planet’s noble inhabitants and used their trust and kindness as invitation to kill all but one witness. In the present the Eltarians have seemingly destroyed Zordon and his power chamber while their Sentry Force Four attacks the rangers.
Unbeknownst to them Billy is in the command center and has rescued Zordon into another chamber. This book has developed Billy’s character more than any, making him an independent operator which makes sense for this era. Sentry Force Four is an interesting group of villains in that they are unique and varied in both personalities and powers. The hope is that they stick around long enough to truly become a part of the lore.
The art through this battle and this entire issue is a step up from prior. The pastels, sharp backgrounds and reflective surfaces have combined to become a signature look for the series. While it can be jarring at times, it does create a personality for this series distinct from its Power Rangers sister book. Zartus warns Zedd not to get involved and of course Zedd immediately disobeys and sends a team to the Command Center to ensure Zordon remains destroyed. Skull mopes about Candice’s disappearance before taking off with Bulk to get the scope on the Eltarian invasion.
The Rangers gather on Promethea where Grace and Matt tell them Zordon is gone with Grace trying to take charge in his stead as the Eltarians gather just outside. This book bursts with action, characterization and massive matchups. The Rangers have a true threat and this war is just getting started.
