This is also a very political era and Marc Guggenheim smartly gives this first issue depth by making strong statements about political intervention and war. Jedi are often called to intervene on one side or another in war, but what is their duty in investigating the details of that conflict before jumping headfirst into the frey. This issue is clearly also a parallel to American intervention in the world and our own responsibility towards understanding the nuances of any conflicts before injecting our power and weapons towards one side.
Guggenheim also smartly gives us a lot of Jedi characters he can play with. The larger stars of this era are all present, but lesser characters are introduced which will allow more story telling latitude and suspense. Add to that some truly excellent artwork by Madibek Musabekov with recognizable characters, incredible action sequences, and a truly cinematic feel. Musabekov is a perfect match for this adventure series as is colorist Luis Guerrero.
The issue begins on Syrinx Prime where the Jedi have been called for peace talks with Vekura. Yoda, Mace Windu and Ki-Adi-Mundi lead efforts to quash an attack. Yoda pronounces that the Vekura attack in Syrinx Prime was unprovoked. Meanwhile Qui Gon is on Vekura with Jedi Knight Berem Khana trying every method to force a withdrawal. They are attacked by a mysterious masked operative. On Syrinx Prime, Adi Gallia and Seera Longa discover a prison camp with captives from Vekura. They realize Vekura’s invasion was not unprovoked.
The Jedi talk to both sides about ending the conflict even while destroying the weapons and capabilities of both armies. They force peace onto both sides and end the conflict. Back on Coruscant, Berem tells Qui Gon their mystery attacking had been tracking Qui Gon specifically. Obi Wan trains with Yoda and has a vision of the future, which includes Qui Gon being killed by the mysterious masked attacker.
This new series has beautiful art, great characters and incredible promise. Obi Wan’s vision of the future is filled with a range of characters and concepts promising massive action, fun character arcs and insane action. This is the kind of big, bombastic, intelligent and action packed Star Wars series we have need.
