Review: The Plot #7

The Plot is a simple tale lifted greatly by a fantastic gothic tone and astounding artwork. The story follows the fallout of Chase Lane“s decision to move his niece and nephew with him to his family home. The home is clearly the wrong place to be as there are evil spirits hunting every turn.

The swamp like creatures have been on the attack and Chase who has had a lifetime of knowing his family was cursed takes it calmly and systematically fights back. Chase is helped by his niece and nephew in this fight but somewhat hindered by the arrival of an old flame Reese.

As Reese rests Chase and his dog Tage work to save the children. Meanwhile the police try to head towards the Manor. As various swamps-like creatures attack the family fights back. The plot thickens as one of the creatures morphs into the form of Chase“s father. Chase realizes to what degree the horrors are interlaced with his family. As they fight the monster Reese complicates things by stabbing the monster but also stabbing Chase just as the issue ends.

The story and the battles are simple enough. The artwork is fantastic and the battle scenes are well done. Joshua Hixson is a massively talented artist and this book just goes to another level with the battle scenes. The Gothic look is perfect for the tone of the story and the characters and setting mesh well together. What really pulls the art together is the fantastic coloring job by Curt Michael Russell. It is very reminiscent of the coloring that was done for the Afterlife of Archie series.

It will be interesting to see if this book can stick the landing with its final issue. This is very clearly a metaphorical visitation of the characters trying to deal with the past and the horrors of a rotten family. Even as they try to build a new family their past threatens to tear them down. The book uses these familiar tropes effectively and the art makes it truly special.
