The book opens with Captain Pike speaking to Captain Seryn of the destroyed Zorruvian ship in the Enterprise sickbay. Only 17 of her crew were able to be saved. Seryn also then dies, reminding us of the large stakes involved. The crew confer on ways to survive the next foot of the race through a massive electric storm. Meanwhile Una works to convince the Rovok commander Corsok to work with the Enterprise but he is not trusting of Pike’s willingness to help them. Spock has a much easier time with the Karogie as their meditative methods merge well with his Vulcan side. On the Enterprise Pelia suggests using the lighting to increase the ship’s speed. The ship’s guest Aisla pushes for more extreme measures and when dismissed she knocks out Sam Kirk and flees. Una’s efforts fair as the Rovok imprison her and attack the Enterprise directly. The battle on the hull of the Enterprise is interrupted by a massive electric storm. Meanwhile Aisla reveals she works for Zelhyx and commandeers the Enterprise weapons to aim them towards the Karogie.
This is just a fantastic, fun issue, full of great character moments, great art and punctuated by some fun action. It is a much less cerebral form of storytelling but works well in the comics medium. The art is incredible, consistent and perfectly rendered. Every character is unique and recognizable in both appearance and personality. This is an absolutely great crew of characters and planting a member of the crew on the other ships allows us to see their perspectives and motivations. The book could use a bit more originality in the setup of this race, but it is made complex enough and enjoyable enough to be worth the ride. This is a fantastic, bright, interesting book perfectly aligned with the energy and character moments which fill the series.
