Star Wars High Republic has been moving at breakneck speed, so it’s an absolute gift to see some faces we know well get more time to unfold as characters rather than a group of heroes. We need time to see each character gain more development and more depth and this issue gives us that in spades even while giving us some incredible action and characters.
There are also some insanely cool characters from the novels making their comic debut here. Finally getting more visuals on Goede, the navigator who looks like a massive Boulder, is just as ironically cool as it should be. Getting the rest of the crew of The Vessel, Affie Hollow and Leox Gyasi is also a treat. These are characters we have grown to love under the care of other creators, so getting to see them grow even cooler under the able hands of writer Daniel Jose Older and artists Harvey Tolibao abd Pow Rodrix is fantastic. The book also has one of the best colorists on the stands with Rebecca Nalty, who knows just how to emphasize the action and quirky characters.
The young Jedi Farzala and Qort from the prior arc travel with the crew of The Vessel and their master Obratuk to Nal Hutta for peace negotiations with the Hutts. After Obratuk quite hilariously refuses to wake up, the younger Jedi are forced to try and broker the peace. The Vessel is overtaken by bandits and the ship fires at the negotiations.
Thankfully Geode mysteriously sneaks himself back into the pilot seat and helps them take evasive action against a Hutt retaliation. Farzala and Leox are still planet-side and flee a Rancor only to run into a plant-like Drengir. Farzala and Leox are captured down below even while Affie and Qort overhear that Jabba himself sent the bandits to take over The Vessel up above.
This is the promise of High Republic realized, so many characters and concepts we got to know in the first cycle mixing it up and having an incredible adventure with massive stakes. The fact that we already see these characters as familiar friends is a tribute to the great writing by all the High Republic creators.
