Review: Star Wars High Republic Adventures #9

Story Thus far:

In the last tie-in issue  of Star Wars High Republic Adventures #8 while on the Starlight, Lula, Zeen, Farzala, and Qort recover from their adventures on the Junk Moon  against the Nihil, and now must travel to assist a Jedi Knight who is defending a Jedi temple on Takodona.  Maz Kanata  made her 1st appearance as the  “pirate queen” for the planet Takadana.

In the current issue  of Star Wars High Republic Adventures #9, the Padwans led by Qort travel to the Western Reaches in order to reach Takodana located in the Mid Rim.  Maz Kanata eagerly greets Qort who has apparently known him since he was in diapers.  A brief  and beautiful reunion was happening until the reason why the Padwans are there comes to the surface.  The Jedi Temple was attacked.  Some very interesting background on Qort and his people the Aloxians were provided.

Art:

Definitely impactful . There is a lot going on in this issue, but my favorite panels involved Qort as a baby. Just in one issue I feel like I’ve always known about Qort and can’t wait to see more of what he can do.  In fact, there were quite a few panels that I would love to see as 2nd or 3rd print covers.  A definite treat is the interior blueprint to the inside of the house of Maz Kanata.

Script:

I have to extra points due to the efficiency of this issue.  It came in and gave the necessary information for the story, used it, then got us out of there ! Loved it!  The character here are designed to display depth of narrative, and not to sell toys and  I’m here for it.  It’s a smooth introduction to part of the story of Qort.  Even though an element of the story reminds me of Pokemons Cubone.  Honestly, by itself it is a solid issue.  Similarly to Guardians and SWORD are increasingly connected, and back referenced.4

Speculation:

If the do it right Qort could be big.  Qort’s 1st apperance (The High Republic Adventures 1).  Maz Kanata’s 1st appearance (The High Republic Adventures 8) .  By inserting Maz Kannata in the story, this issue firmly implants the padawans in the Star Wars connected Universe.
