Review: The Crow: Lethe #1 (of 3)

The Crow: Lethe #1 | IDW PublishingHey kiddos, this is not your daddy“s Crow. You will not find some greasy long haired emo weirdo in a trench coat and coat makeup, walking slowly to alternative music, with an emo frown with incest engaging villains to duel. This is the stuff Mom“ of America used to plug up the phones of the K-mart or the local Piggy Wiggly in protest. Instead sadism, Masochism, Furries, and Juggalos are feature prominently within the first 10 pages.

In the first issue of Crow Lethe #1, we are introduced to Null Narcos, the man who feels no pain, as the Main attraction for the Freak Chic Circus. He sticks nails in his body for the show. He has a close friend named Benga Lee who I“m not sure whether she is a furry, or a woman tattooed to look like a white panther. But an interesting aspect of the null character is that he had lost his memory shortly before joining the group of traveling circus performers. All seems to be going well for null in his new life until a mysterious stranger from his past appears.

Overall the most impressive character to me is Ms. Combustible also known as Busty the ringmaster. Who loves to integrate Greek Mythology into her acts.

For what it is I have to give it a 4/5 stars. I do love the interior art. I have literally seen the same circus atmosphere in quite a few titles but never done so well. There isn“t much of story to dig into yet, but plenty of questions. Not much character building, but plenty of displays of bad habits. Those looking for any connection to the Original Crow franchise won“t find much except for the Crows.
